Chereads / BRIDE of THE MIST / Chapter 4 - Confrontation

Chapter 4 - Confrontation

Lily emerged from the town hall, her mind racing with thoughts and questions. She couldn't believe what she had just discovered - that the legend of the bride of the mist was not just a myth, but a dark secret that the town had been keeping hidden for almost a century.

She walked aimlessly through the deserted streets, trying to process everything she had learned. As she walked, she noticed that the fog had grown thicker, obscuring her vision and making it difficult to see where she was going.

Suddenly, she heard footsteps behind her. She turned around, but there was no one there. She dismissed it as her imagination and kept walking, but the footsteps grew louder and closer.

She quickened her pace, feeling a sense of unease. She didn't know who or what was following her, but she knew that she needed to get out of there.

As she turned a corner, she saw a figure looming ahead of her in the mist. She couldn't make out any features, but she could tell that it was human. She tried to turn back, but it was too late - the figure had already spotted her.

"Who are you?" the figure demanded, stepping closer.

Lily hesitated for a moment, unsure of what to say. But she knew that she couldn't keep the secret to herself any longer.

"I'm a journalist," she said. "I came here to investigate the legend of the bride of the mist."

The figure stepped closer, and Lily could now see that it was a woman, tall and imposing with a stern expression on her face.

"You shouldn't have come here," the woman said. "This is a small town, and we don't take kindly to outsiders poking their noses into our business."

"I'm sorry," Lily said, her voice trembling. "But I had to find out the truth. The legend of the bride of the mist is more than just a story - it's a real event that happened almost a hundred years ago. And there have been other disappearances since then, all on misty nights like this one."

The woman's expression softened slightly, and she seemed to be considering Lily's words.

"You're right," she said. "The legend of the bride of the mist is more than just a story. It's a part of our town's history, and one that we're not proud of. But we've tried to keep it hidden for a reason. We don't want outsiders coming in and making a spectacle of it."

"But don't you see?" Lily said. "This is important. People need to know the truth. You can't just keep something like this hidden."

The woman sighed and shook her head. "I know you're right," she said. "But it's not that simple. This is a small town, and we have our own ways of doing things. We don't want to cause a panic or draw unwanted attention to ourselves."

Lily nodded, understanding the woman's concerns. But she knew that she couldn't just walk away from this.

"I won't write anything that will harm the town," she said. "But people deserve to know the truth. I promise I'll be respectful and responsible with the information."

The woman studied her for a moment, as if weighing her options. Finally, she nodded.

"Alright," she said. "I'll give you a chance. But you have to promise me that you won't reveal anything that could harm the town or its people. And you have to leave as soon as you've got what you need."

Lily agreed to the terms, and the woman led her to a small, nondescript building on the edge of town. Inside, she introduced Lily to a group of townspeople.
