Chapter 20 - Grades

The male teenager that was within the revelation that Azra had knowledge of had woken up a little later and found himself very cold without his coat.

He had been unconscious for some time and had been sleeping out of the sight of others so he was only woken up by the cold wind that hit his body.

Once he had come to his senses, he realised that his coat was gone and thought back to his strange encounter earlier before he passed out.

He hurried home and found nothing out of order until he could no longer find the book that he brought home.

It was not like he could suddenly report a break in and that he was missing a book to curse and harm others so he was hesitant on what he should do about the missing book.

He had no real leads to follow since Azra had done her best to conceal her appearance and identify when she made contact with him.

The only contact that was made with her out in the open was when he had run into her outside of the second hand store but he did not stop to look back to her.

When Azra did visit any location within the town, she had not shown her appearance off either and had not given away any details of where she was from.

Even if he did decide to report the incident or tried to find Azra himself, he would not be able to get that far with the investigation with a lack of evidence available and an incomplete witness statement.

Azra did not plan to make anymore trips to the town so unless he had made a trip to the village that she was staying in, he would have no chance of running into her.

The revelation had been changed from its original form thanks to the intervention of Azra.

The only way that it could still happen was if he had a memory so good that he could memorise something that he had looked over just once but he did not and what he had remembered was just the basics of the book without the chants, hand signs or symbols used.

He could not get his revenge but it was good for him that he did not get involved with the world of spirits and Balancers.

He would not have been able to survive in that world and he was not fully prepared to take the step into that world so he had only used certain parts of the book to cast curses on others.

He was unwilling to give up on certain things or make the sacrifices needed to gain the sight to see spirits but he had used his own lifespan and sacrificed the lives of animals to cast several spells from the book.

Among the spells, the ones that he had used before he had been stopped was a type of curse that was attached to his target and attracted corrupted spirits towards that person or location.

He would have used those spells to attract the corrupted spirits to harm those that had bullied him or caused him problems.

It would not have been that bad of a weaker spirit was attracted but eventually more curses had resulted in more spirits being attracted to the school or the homes of those that were cursed.

More dangerous evil spirits gathered around the school and started to do real harm to the students and teachers inside until the Watchers noticed the growing problem and reported it.

There were some deaths that happened but it did not result in that many of them dying once the Balancers had solved the problem.

The youth behind it could not see the results of what he had done but he was able to see how it turned out once people started being unwell and dying.

The strange events surrounding the school had let him realise that he was the one that had caused it all but it was too late to stop it.

The hero of the revelation would be the one to find out who was behind it and the youth would be punished according to the Balancer laws even though he himself was not a Balancer so his life would not have been pleasant for the remainder of it.

That would have all happened around two to three months in the future and the revelation had contained more information about how the hero had already finished up preparing to move to the capital to become an official Balancer.

The hero was someone that had grown up with the sight and an ability of their own so they had taken on the role of a Balancer where he lived and was the main person to handle any strange supernatural events.

His father was a Balancer so that had been passed onto him and he learned the rules of the spirit world very quickly, a certain amount of secrecy was needed for him to be able to perform his duties without being exposed to others but he was able to handle it without any manor issues before he made his journey to the capital.

There was an official Balancer school where he could learn how to improve himself, where he could be sent on different tasks and where he would meet the geniuses of the different clans.

The rankings of the spirits and Balancers were graded depending on their own danger or capability levels and they were graded from E to SSS.

The higher the grade, the higher amount of life energy they possessed, the bigger they were in size, the better their abilities and the more difficult they were to exorcise.

If a spirit was not killed in one blow then a part of their life energy would be depleted but it could use the remaining life energy to heal its wound with what remained if it had enough to spare or was a high grade spirit.

Either a spirit could be worn down by smaller attacks, they could be inflicted with a highly fatal targeted blow or they could be completely obliterated with a large attack.

E to D grade was the lowest grade for common or newborn spirits that could be exorcised if confronted with enough life energy to match the power of a wooden bat being swung around.

C grade was the most basic grade of spirit that could be exorcised if hit by enough life energy to match the force produced by a handgun.

B grade was more dangerous and required enough life energy to exorcise them to match the power of a shotgun blast but some could require more energy for safe measure.

A grade was more well known as the ability grade so their danger level was far higher and they required enough force that matched what a tank projectile could produce to break past their tough body and to exorcise them.

Those above S grade to SSS grade were considered as their own grade entirely with different levels of power that could allow them to endure even heavier attacks on them and to cause much larger feats of death and destruction.

Even a cluster bomb worth of power using life energy may not even be enough to successfully exorcise an SS grade.

Unlike humans who gained an ability once they were born, the spirits gained theirs once they reached A grade and improved upon that ability further to raise their rank higher.

The power of an SSS grade human or spirit could be used to protect, rule or destroy a large enough area but that did not always let them stay at the very top of the power structure and larger numbers of people could always be used to bring down something stronger.

Power was very important but so was having good enough experience and tactics to overcome each Balancer or Spirits whether it is alone or as part of a larger group.

The Balancer definition of power grades was not exactly the same but it had a lot to do with how well that Balancer performed their duties and what kind of techniques they were able to master to a higher realm.

Slowly their abilities would seem inhuman even if their bodies were not properly trained due to them using their life energy to cast spells or aid them in combat.

Some humans with far less life energy that could only qualify as Watchers or low grade Balancers would only be able to deal with the lowest E or D grades unless they were able to get their hands on a decent spirit weapon that could be used to augment their life energy into their attacks.

The main problem was that there were few spirit weapons that could be used from far away so there would be more Balancers putting their own bodies at risk if they were not as experienced in combat and did not have high physical capabilities to avoid any retaliation from the spirit.

A group of low grade Balancers could possibly risk going after C or B grades if they had a spirit weapon but the risk to their lives would be much higher.

If someone possessed a powerful ability then it would be possible for them to jump past their own capabilities but it depended on how useful their ability was and how well they used it in battle.

A very high grade of ability could be used to defeat B grade spirits or less powerful A grade spirits with a less powerful ability of their own.

Once they got to A grade and higher, there was a much clearer definition of power where the power of each Balancer or Spirit could differ greatly and be able to endure a lot or could cause a large amount of destruction.

Another month had passed by when Azra was busy studying until the day came that she was finally more sure of herself and that she was fully determined to take that step into the spirit world.

She had sat on a bus and travelled for a long time until she finally reached the location that was important for her future plans.
