With Anne's assistance, Mabel managed to clamber out of the boat and onto the pier. Her dress bore a few damp patches from their impromptu water fight, a small price to pay for her momentary rebellion.
Clara, on the other hand, had been thoroughly drenched, leaving her too tired to maintain her anger. She cast Mabel a disappointed look as the mischievous girl lowered her head in remorse.
"I'm sorry, Nanny. I won't do it again," Mabel apologized, her mischievous grin held at bay.
Clara, despite her initial exasperation, let out a sigh and massaged her temple. Her soaked dress clung to her as she hugged Mabel tightly, transferring some of her wetness to the girl.
"No! Don't hug me like that, Nanny!" Mabel protested, attempting to squirm out of Clara's embrace.
