Chapter 3 - Reconnecting

Sasuke POV

The days passed by in a blur for Sasuke as people came in and out of his room, mostly to annoy him with further tests and procedures they needed to do. Most of the nurses would stare at him, even if they didn't need to be doing anything. Some would stare in wonder and awe, while those closer to him would skirt about trying to accomplish their task as quickly as possible so they could get a safe distance away from him. Sasuke was amused by the thought. If those standing by the door thought that they were safe from him if he wanted to attack, they were more idiotic than Naruto.

Sasuke didn't openly object or complain about whatever needed to be done. He didn't need to cause people to be more afraid of him. The only person who did not treat him strangely was a certain pink-haired medic. She was kind and warm, and she actually saw him as a person instead of something to be admired or feared. Sakura had picked up on his discomfort of having too many people around, and she had set guards at the door to make sure no one unnecessarily came in. Sasuke appreciated the effort, and he liked having her around more than anyone else.

Of his many visitors, by far the loudest was Naruto. He came barging in the door and ran towards Sasuke with a huge, stupid grin on his face.

"Hey, you bastard! You finally woke up! Not to brag or anything, but I've been awake for DAYS. I'm going crazy just staying in my room all the time. I want to go train! Do you know they won't even let me…."

As Naruto rambled on, Sasuke cringed at the noise level of his best friend. He couldn't even cover his ears due to his restraints. Well, and he only had one hand too. Maybe he could figure out a way to use the pillow. Completely ignoring the blonde next to him, Sasuke's eyes shifted to the door once again to see Sakura enter with an amused face. Sasuke sharpened his glance to let her know that he did not appreciate suddenly being bombarded with Naruto. She simply smiled in return. Sasuke sighed in acceptance. She could see right through him, couldn't she? Of course, she would know how happy he was to have his friends around.

Sakura's POV

Naruto ran off down the hallway as fast as he could before Sakura could even finish saying that he could go visit Sasuke now. She chuckled and followed him at a normal pace. She was sure Sasuke would be grumpy when she got there. Coming to the already open door, she smiled at the guards outside who were still trying to catch up with the fact that a yellow-haired blur had flown past them without hesitation.

Predictably, Naruto was yammering on about everything he had done and all his complaints. She noted Sasuke's fake glare and smiled in response. Sakura had already made sure that several things happened when Sasuke woke up. There were far too many prying people, so she posted guards at his door and made sure to take any of his rounds whenever she could. She was doing a good job of it, but it wasn't always easy. She had to trade some of her best surgeries and rounds to switch with some people. So she figured an adequate payment for all her efforts was to allow Naruto to annoy Sasuke just a little.

"Alright, Naruto. There's only so much information someone can take in with a few minutes," Sakura interrupted her boisterous friend, "Hey Sasuke, how are you doing today?"

"Fine before someone let him off his leash."

"Hey! You know you're happy I'm here. Be a little more grateful!" Naruto jumped to his own defense.

Sakura smiled at both of them. It warmed her heart to see her team back together like this. She sat down on the chair next to the bed and listened as Naruto resumed his speech. Now he was complaining about learning how to use his left hand for ordinary tasks.

"It's so annoying! I'm not a kid, so I should be able to do simple things. I bet I can get back to normal faster than you can, you bastard!"

Sasuke raised his eyebrows and looked down at his restraints as he said, "Well, it's not like I can practice much."

That shut Naruto up quickly. He was able to freely move around while Sasuke wasn't even able to scratch an itch unless it was a few centimeters from his right hand.

"I didn't expect that I would be free to move. Don't worry about it." After seeing the looks on his companions' faces, Sasuke tried to calm them down.

"Heh, yeah I guess that's true…" Naruto was unable to pick up his normal chatter and looked awkwardly to the side.

Sasuke decided to change the subject. "Kakashi is Hokage now?"

Leaping at the new discussion, Naruto beamed, "Yeah! He's always complaining about how he doesn't have time to read anymore. What a lazy Hokage! He said he's going to come visit you soon though!" Naruto hit Sasuke's left arm as he said this and hit a nerve.

Immediately, Sasuke's arm erupted in pain. He scrunched his face against the pain and thrashed at the restraints to try get some relief. Sakura hurried around the bed and began trying to soothe the injured arm. It was difficult with how much he was moving, so she had Naruto attempt to keep his shoulder steady. After several long minutes, Sasuke stopped thrashing and grew still. His face was still screwed up in pain, but the cooling chakra was doing its job.

Sasuke's POV

As the erupting pain receded, Sasuke began to relax bit by bit. When he could open his eyes again, he looked at Sakura. She finished the healing round in the wound and looked at him closely. He wished he could at least wipe the sweat from his face and neck. No one said anything as Sasuke moved his eyes over to Naruto. What he saw in both their faces made him want to run, made him want to shrink into a hole where no one could see him anymore. They were pitying him. Sasuke turned his face as far as he could into the pillow to the right of him. He didn't want to see that, not from them.

He flinched when a small hand carefully touched his left shoulder, but it didn't deter the medic. She obviously thought this was a comforting move, and while it was not unpleasant, he did not want to be comforted. He wanted to heal and become strong again.

"Does that happen often? Why have you never said anything? If I knew, I could have sped up the healing treatments or tried different tactics!" Sakura's voice was quiet, and she questioned him.

Not looking back at her, Sasuke said, "It happens sometimes. A few times a night, while I'm asleep."

"A few times a night?" Sakura sounded shocked that he had to deal with this so often and yet didn't complain about it. "Well, it's been aggravated by the stress of that. I'll need to work on it more frequently. I'm sorry I didn't notice."

Sasuke just grunted in acknowledgement, but he did return his gaze to her face. The pity was gone from her eyes, which greatly relaxed Sasuke.

Sakura smiled at Sasuke before looking over to Naruto. "Let's let him rest. You need to have a healing session also."

Frowning, Naruto started walking toward the door as he looked back at Sasuke and said, "Later then, Sasuke! I'll come visit often!"

Sasuke didn't bother to answer but watched as Sakura followed after their friend. Sakura turned around at the door and smiled as her farewell. With the door closed, Sasuke could finally fully relax. He had wanted to deal with the spasms himself rather than complain and become more of a nuisance. Sighing, he allowed his mind to wander a bit before succumbing to a nap.
