Chapter 40 - Night Action

With the departure of Nail and his group toward the site of Mero's servants and slaves, Khaa, his daughter, and grandchildren quickly began collecting what they had of value in their residence.

They would simply abandon less important things like clothes and furniture since they didn't have time to make a complete move.

Only what could be sold and turned into coins, such as jewelry, precious stones, and the coins themselves, were worth the effort of gathering and carrying.

This place did not have many of these things besides the coins, which were all kept in a small wooden box.

Shui and this woman had no extravagant expenses, so they had accumulated all their profits in that object.

She managed to move fast enough and picked that up before her daughter had even finished collecting the essentials to keep her children alive for the next few days.

"Let's go. The longer we stay in Cusca, the worse for us." The old woman said before heading toward the back doors.

That was not the first time she had gotten into trouble with a higher-level power. Precisely because she had experience, she knew that everything had to be done quickly. Otherwise, not only she but her entire family, including the little ones, would be murdered.

But this was not a world where people could easily locate, identify and punish fugitives. Khaa knew this very well, for she had run away once before and survived to this day. On this occasion, she knew that as long as she went away and stayed a few months without appearing in public, her problems would disappear.

Her daughter was very obedient, so she 'blindly' trusted her mother, quickly taking her children with a few things and leaving in the middle of the night.

Traveling at night was dangerous, but those on the run had no time to worry about common risks!

So they kept walking through the streets of Cusca, more and more heading towards one of the city's exits.

...

A few minutes after the departure of Nail and his men, he and seven individuals arrived in front of the resting place of Mero's men in Cusca.

The place in question looked like a barn near Mero's store, where there were extensive materials that could not be stored in the shop, as in the case of tree trunks.

But there was also the collective room for the slaves and the individual rooms for Mero's servants.

In front of this place, Nail clenched his fists and breathed deeply, feeling at a crossroads of fate.

The men in the surrounding area, some holding torches, clearing their way, others with axes and swords in their hands, looked at him, expecting this man's orders.

Khaa's eldest son worked with the store of this woman and Shui, but he had his background before the arrival of Mero's servant in this city. He was a local petty criminal who committed crimes against travelers on the roads, using traps to impede the path of people traveling in wagons and then robbing them.

Because of this background, he and all his men who worked for Khaa had combat experience and were not there just to try something that would kill them.

The risk of any of them dying was great, true. But they were conscientious warriors, minimally capable of adequately holding weapons and killing people.

If they had a little luck, they could kill the people in Tenur's group and still leave to meet Khaa later.

Nail then said. "Two of you will go around the back, another two in the front. The rest of you will accompany me along the left side."

The building ahead had no openings of any kind on the right side, so Nail's plan would lead his men into the interior of the enemy building through every possible entrance.

He finished his orders. "Don't hesitate. Kill whoever is in your way, whether they are slaves or servants, men or women."

"Yes!" Those men said simultaneously before putting out their torches and setting off toward their mission.

That was not a developed place, with strong buildings and surrounded by defenses. Only the residences of large families, and wealthy people, had security mechanisms to prevent strangers from entering at night.

Ordinary places, such as the warehouse in front of this group, could usually be easily invaded by malicious people.

What prevented this from happening chaotically throughout the city? Simple, 99% of the population didn't have much to offer, while the 1% had the so-called protections on their side.

Therefore, invasions were not as common as could be imagined considering how easy it was to enter private places in this place.

Thus, Nail's group found no difficulty getting past the warehouse's outermost windows and doors, quickly entering the covered part of the property.

Upon entering there, Nail and his men following him along the left side of the building found a dark place where one could barely see well due to the presence of few windows and no torch in the surroundings.

But with the diameter of their pupils adjusted to this environment and experience from having already done much acting in the dark, these men were neither frightened nor hurried.

They strolled through that entrance area, where several logs, the smallest of which was more than 7 meters long, were stacked in the middle of the building.

Each went in different directions, aiming to maximize the group's surveillance area and more quickly achieve their goal in this place.

Eliminate everyone!

Nail had his hands close to his chest, stumps holding an axe, while he had two daggers in his clothing, in places easy for him to access in case of need.

He went toward one of the doors of this large area while the rest of the men were spread out over the second floor of this building.

This man narrowed his eyes and frowned, while with one hand, he slowly pushed the door open, trying not to make noise.

But it was impossible to stop the creaking of the wood, and the noise reverberated through the area as if the sound of the movement had been thunderous.

Such was the sensitivity of someone trying to do what they shouldn't!

Because of that noise, Nail practically stopped breathing and looked around inside the room, waiting to see if anyone would have the reaction to stand up.

Seeing that he hadn't caught anyone's attention, he breathed the air back into his lungs and stepped forward.

"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!"

At that instant, the sound of meat being cut arose, followed by the scream of a man in agony spread throughout the warehouse area, alerting everyone in the attack group.

"Fall back! This is a trap!" Nail realized the situation, but it was already too late.

At that instant, Amir appeared behind him and did what he was supposed to do!

...
