Chapter 9 - I Need a Job

While Clark and Jay were enjoying the dread that swept over Oliver when he was demoted, Nathaniel stepped into one of the smaller meeting rooms of DLR Enterprises.

A young woman, possibly a fresh university graduate sat across from him and studied his resume.

Of course, it had been changed to alter some information about Nathaniel, but it still had most of his qualifications properly listed.

She drummed her fingers on the table as she shyly looked up at Nathaniel before quickly looking back down at the resume in her hand.

Nathaniel could tell that the woman was interested in him, unfortunately for her there was someone else that occupied his heart.

"Mr. Rue," the woman from the human resources department said as she finally placed down the document in her hand. "Are you sure that you are interested in a clerical role in DLR enterprises? You are qualified for much higher paying jobs."

"No, I'll be fine with a clerical role," Nathaniel said, shaking his head.

The woman frowned but nodded.

"I see no reason as to why we can't hire you," She stated with a sigh. She truly thought that a man with Nate Rue's qualifications was being wasted in such a low position. "Welcome to DLR Enterprises Mr. Nate Rue, you start on Monday."

"Thank you," Nathaniel said as he stood and shook the woman's hand, and gave her a smile.

He didn't fail to notice, however, how she had looked away, and a slight blush formed on her cheeks.

Nate turned to leave, but the woman spoke again.

"Mr. Rue," she suddenly said. "Be careful of your supervisor, he will know that you have better academic qualifications than he does and he may try to oppress you."

"Thanks," Nate said as he flashed her another smile before finally leaving.

He couldn't help but wonder why Maya had gone to DLR Enterprises today and what had happened to her.

He had asked Clark to make sure no one oppressed her and he trusted his assistant, but he still couldn't help but worry.

As if having read his mind, Nathaniel's phone begins to ring, with Jay's name flashing on the screen.

"Jay, I was about to call you," Nathaniel said as he walked into the DLR Enterprise's lobby. "Did anything happen?"

"Where are you and how did Clark know Maya was here?" Jay asked in a hushed voice, wary that other employees would overhear his conversation with Nate.

"I asked him to check up on her, is there an issue?" Nathaniel chose to ignore Jay's first question, to him his priority was how Maya was doing and if she had encountered any hardship in his company.

"Oh, that explains his impeccable timing," Jay chuckled. "She actually came over to apologize to Clark."

"Why would she want to apologize to Clark?" Nathaniel was perplexed by Jay's statement.

"Because of the scene she caused at Primus Hotel, clearly your assistant was going to tell her that it was nothing and simply forgive her, but a very special rejected man jumped in," Jay was clearly amused by the story he was telling, making Nathaniel smile at the other end of the line.

"And what did my assistant do?" he asked.

"He took Oliver up on his offer and imposed a very interesting demerit," Jay informed his friend. "He demoted Oliver Wright."

Nathaniel sighed and shook his head.

He knew that something like this was bound to happen, his people were just way too loyal and were using every opportunity to stick up for him.

"So where are you? How did you know Maya was here?" Jay asked.

"I'm in the lobby, I applied for a job as a clerk in the finance department," Nathaniel flatly answered.

"You did what?!" Jay was shocked by what he had done. "Why would the President and CEO want to work as a lowly clerk?"

"To find out the truth," Nathaniel explained. "I'm already hiding my identity to mess with Oliver, might as well put my efforts to more use by figuring out how someone like him is in such a high position."

"You think someone is abusing their position in DLR Enterprises?" Jay asked.

"I do," Nathaniel replied. "Plus I need a job, Maya won't fall for me if I'm poor and destitute."

"I don't think you can be poor and destitute," Jay grumbled.

"I'll talk to you later," Nathaniel said as he ended the call and walked out of DLR Enterprise's lobby.

He quickly called his assistant as soon as he got out.

Clark was always quick to pick up whenever it came to his boss's calls. He was wise enough not to make Mr. De La Rue wait.

"Yes, Mr. De La Rue," Clark answered in a very formal manner, meaning he was with other people.

"Do I need to ask or will you tell me why the hell Oliver Wright was demoted?" Nathaniel raised his voice, unhappy that his assistant had jumped the gun.

"B—b—but sir he was unqualified in the first place—" Clark's voice shook as he could feel Nathaniel's anger in his tone.

"I know that," Nathaniel grumbled as he moved away from the lobby entrance. He couldn't let some random eavesdropper overhear his conversation with Clark. "But there is a reason I was keeping him in that position."

Nathaniel initially had planned to have the entire company watch as Oliver failed in his work, but it was too late now. He had to recalibrate his plans.

"Nevermind," Nathaniel said as he watched a familiar figure step out of the lobby. He quickly rushed to end his conversation with Clark. "I'll do something else, I'll be at the back entrance at four in the afternoon, make sure it's clear."

Nathaniel didn't bother to wait for Clark's response, he simply dropped the call and shoved his phone in his pocket before running up to Maya as she waited for a cab.

"Maya, he called out waving to her," He couldn't hide how happy he was at the coincidence.
