Abigail turned her distorted and distraught gaze to Alex.
"No, Alex...I can't! I can't go with you. I can't have anything to do with you or the man who despises me. I can't afford to look at him and remind myself that I was the product of a sin. You said it yourself that my mother was the reason why your mother and grandmother died. How could you ever want to have anything to do with me after what my mother did to your family?"
"Abby, it's not your fault. You are not responsible for anything. It was our parents that made the mistake and not us." Alex's attempt to reason with her fell on deaf ears.
"No, Alex... It wasn't your parents' fault. It was my mother's fault. She came into your happy home and destroyed it. I can't believe history is repeating itself. I can't believe I'm the reason why you are in so much pain. I feel so ashamed of myself. I am nothing but a curse like my mother."
