Chapter 18 - Chapter-18 Reactions

When all the discussions about land reforms happening in Palamidi Fortress,

Inside the British embassy in Nafpilon, a tall man with a long face and golden hair, sat inside his office. He was dressed in a black frock coat featuring a high collar and a pristine white waistcoat. A black cravat was around his neck while his lower half was covered by a pair of black trousers.

He was Sir Stratford Canning, the British ambassador to Greece, cousin of famous British Foreign secretary George Canning. He was also appointed by his cousin in Greece in 1831 to maintain British influence in Greece.

Now, in front of him standing was a British spy, Louis.

Stratford asked,

"Why are you here now, Louis? Is there any news from the Fortress?"

Louis answered,

"Sir, there is. Greek landowner families have already met with King Otto of Greece in Palamidi Fortress. From the info I have, they are discussing about something. I am not sure about the purpose of this meeting."

Hearing the words from Louis, Stratford thought about the reasons of their meeting. He also confused that what was the reason that their loyal supporter Alexandros Mavrokodatos and others in the Greek government didn't inform him about this meeting. Then he pondered on the matters that these wealthy people had something and the Greek government strictly needed it. He remembered they had influence and land. After that, he realised that Greek government needed those lands for the development of the country. After coming into conclusion, he smiled inwardly and thought that King Otto would be suffering in future because of political backlash. It would be good opportunity for British to get more power in Greece.

Then he ordered Louis,

"Let's watch for now. We may know it soon. Leave now."

"Alright, Sir."

Louis left after a swift reply.

Stratford murmured with a chuckle,

"A young upstart, trying to fight. Well. Let's see. How much will you struggle?"

Around the same time in Russian embassy,

Russian ambassador Count Peter Ivanovich Prokesch-Osten was sitting in his office with a piece of paper in his hand. He learned that Otto invited a lot of wealthy landlords in his abode Palamidi Fortress for a meeting. His informant also mentioned him that this meeting was all about land reforms.

"Land reforms, huh. In a backwater country like Greece, the new king is now trying to make land reforms. HaHaHa." Peter laughed like this for a long time then spoke,

"This is really a bold move. But it is Greece, not any Western European kingdom but Eastern European Kingdom. A system that has existed from the Ottoman era to appease local landlords and solidify their loyalty, can it be dismantled so easily? If he can, he will become famous. But he will face revolution if he can't. Well, I can't understand how can a king bow to common citizens. Let's see what this brat king can do when his own peoples beg to us for support. It will be really interesting to see."

Simultaneously, in the French embassy,

A brown-haired man in his late forties was smoking leisurely with a Cheroots cigar and watching at the sky through nearby window. Suddenly, someone barged into his room without asking anything.

The man, James, who barged into his room, enthusiastically said

"Lord Antoine, I got an information from my informant. See this."

"Oh, I understand. The new king wants to enact land reforms. Bold but foolish. It will not hurt us anyway. James, Leave first."

Spoke Count Antoine-François-Claude de Préval, the French ambassador in Greece watching the piece of paper in his hands. James obeyed his words.

Antoine thought since he already got this news that means others also learned about this. He decided to wait and to learn more from the French supporters in Greek government.

Meanwhile in the Austrian embassy,

Antoine's guess became the truth. Count Karl von Leiningen, the appointed Austrian ambassador in Greece, learned about the meeting of wealthy landlords from his spies like other Great power's ambassadors. He spoke after learning about this news,

"Since, we have an alliance with the father of the new king. Austria will need to support King Otto. Anyway, we will never get any support from others about others. Our government also wants to support Otto in his decisions. Let's support him in his decisions and strengthen our relations."

After the meeting was over, all the Great power's ambassadors learn about Otto's policy about land reforms during evening through their sources. They praised him inwardly for getting such a good deal with those greedy landowners but they also understood that these landowners would take this deal as humiliation. They might revolt in the future for more power. These landowners might also try to get the support of the Great powers in their rebellion. That would be perfect timing for gaining some power in Greek government.

At night in the same day,

Otto called his butler Michael in his bedroom,

"Michael." Otto asked, "Did all Great powers try to learn about today's meeting?"

Michael revealed,

"Yes, Milord. They all have learnt about it from the same informant."

Otto smiled.

"That's better. Just manipulate all the information like this. Also order our spies in Ionian islands to start unarmed uprising with demand of joining Ionian islands in Kingdom of Greece. Let spies in Crete, Thessaly, Epirus, Macedonia be active. Macedonia will be the tough one. So, increase the strength of our spy networks there. Send more arms there secretly. I want an uprising at the next day after my coronation. Another thing, make an announcement to all the rebel leaders if they get success in this endeavour, they will get a chance to join any government job with their qualification wise. They will also get the chance to join Military if they want."

Michael heard his words and obeyed.

"Alright. Your Highness. Your orders will be done."

Then he left the room.

Otto thought in his mind that everything was set. Now, he needed to wait for his chance to strike.
