Chapter 39 - Error 39

We are two after the start of the last quarter, and the situation is not good. The Wolves have resumed gallop and are only 8 points behind the Kings.

Wharton sensed the threat and brought Hector into the field.

Hector is found at the post up, he observes the players' movements, and seeing Bjelica move quickly, he makes the pass. The defender realized it too late, and Bjelica concluded with a layup.

Communication on defense reframes the entire Kings' defense. The Wolves missed their shots, but the Kings didn't either.

The Wolves' Dieng recovers a rebound up the court and attempts a jumper. Miss, but he recovers the offensive rebound and crushes the ball in the basket. Hector could do nothing.

The moral of the Minnesota players is fully up, Okogie will put his shot, and Wiggins will only make one free throw on both attempts, but the gap is seriously reduced.

Bazemore intercepted a bad pass from McLaughlin and made a dunk to relieve the Kings. But Okogie will put a shot back, he wanted to go on a layup, but seeing Hector, he decided to shoot.

Towns returned to the field as a replacement for Dieng, and as soon as he hit his three-pointer shot, the signals turned red for the Kings. Minnesota is back within one possession gap and is only two points behind the Kings. 95-97.

The Kings responded with two well-made free throws from Fox and two more from Bogdanovic.

Martin gave hope with a three-point jumper on a pass from Wiggins, but Barnes scored 5 points in a row—a tip shot after an offensive rebound and a three-pointer shoot.

With only 3 minutes left to play, the Kings led 100-105. Hector is focused on defense, he just forced a tough shot from Towns, and Fox recovers the rebound. Fox is one of the fastest balls in the hand of the league, so he uses this speed to destabilize the opposing defense.

He sped up, but Covington decided to foul rather than give him two easy points. Fox goes to the free throw line and converts his two attempts, full of composure.

Bazemore blocked a layup attempt from Wiggins, who recovered the rebound from his shot. Hector fouled Wiggins' shot right after. He missed his first free throw but converted the second.

Bazemore makes a poorly chosen three-pointer that is missed. But Covington will take his chance. The Wolves are still 4 points behind the Kings.

Let's fast forward a little, there are only thirty seconds left to play, and the score evolved in the meantime and is now 106-111 for the Kings.

Hector will give the coup de grace in two stages. Following a missed shot by Barnes, he will chip the offensive rebound and put a small tip-in worthy of a volleyer.

And to end it, he will perform an authoritative block on a desperate layup attempt by Wiggins. And so, the last component of the historical service is completed.

Despite a 3PT from Napier, the die was cast, and the Kings eventually won 109-115 and got their nineteenth win of the season. Minnesota lost their thirty-fourth game.

At the end of the match, Towns took the initiative to find Hector, hugged him, and continued talking about his appreciation and admiration for Hector.

Hector doesn't know it yet because he's not used to looking at his stats at the end of matches, but he just put his name on a closed list and made a record that will probably be unbreakable.

It was also the first significant performance of the man nicknamed "The Error" by journalists and his peers a few years later.
