Chapter 12 - Chapter Twelve: The Siren

Valerie had always dreamt of many different kinds of nightmares, but not the ones she had earlier. It's so vivid to remember, and very misty to recall. Those dreams we're like nightmares of someone, hearing a voice she can't comprehend.

Everything felt as confusing as the day she discovered her relationship with Ares, the God of War. To think it would be as beckoning as this, she held her head and woke up from a soft bed.

This time, the bed is not as strange as the one in her dreams. This bed is comfy and soft, and also bouncy on the other hand. So she knows that she's not dreaming anymore, and she's probably in a hospital or something.

The interior was white enough to be mistaken as a hospital. Although there is something that can be seen, everything is white. Few furniture materials, a couch and even tables are being designed in each, while a big screen seems to have been installed in front of her.

This kind of room design, she does feel familiar with. Even though it's filled with white paint, this hospital—no, inside the laboratory, Caleb designed a different kind of healing incubator for Valerie since she's not a machine like everyone else.

Although it's designed for Valerie, it's been well used by other mortal staff who were injured during experiments or when something happens to them. So this is basically a place for mortals to dwell when being injured.

She must have slept in a coma, her throat hurts like hell. She tried to speak, and call someone but her voice was silent and it couldn't be heard by anyone. It's as if she was being muted.

There are lots of things happening since the attack, Lyrica was cleaning up after the mess, sending back each human and brainwashing their brains regardless of what they knew about them. Seven had recovered after Lyrica used her own system to remove the cells that bypass her system.

Those who have fallen to the battlefield, disassembled, and were destroyed so heavily got themselves back after being healed within their private incubator.

Most of them got through the process of fixing their broken bones, arms, or feet, others who were shattered in ashes weren't able to survive.

She held her hand against the table and she went through the automatic door which automatically opened when she stood over it. She walked down the hallways that appeared to be silent, and she carefully held the walls that supported her from falling.

It seems that even her feet couldn't move fluently, one wrong step and she might fall as fragile as feathers.

It still confuses her but she wanted to see. After losing herself to that monster of a power, she couldn't remember what happened next. It's not like she remembers someone before, but it still tickles her that she couldn't even do so.

It's Lukas who told her he should be here somewhere. She needed to see him, and ask something.

But her problem was not even Lukas, it was the fact that she heard a voice, and can't remember the contents of it. Those dreams still bug her, as dreams are very sensitive to any demigods like her.

Dreams can be very poetic, and when a dream has a voice. It's not a normal dream anymore.

It might be an oracle...

Lukas might know something. Despite being an offspring, or not related to him directly, Lukas is his offspring and a favorite son.

Those poetic dreams might mean something. As soon as she moved towards an open space, she already was wondering why the entire hallways she just passed through were emptied. Usually, a defense Valkyrie would often patrol every inch of the laboratory.

They don't miss a single thing.

From the hallways to the main big lobby, she heard a voice speaking through a loudspeaker. It was vivid, until she finally walked out of the hallways.

From there, the voice slowly became clearer for her to understand. "During our fight with the Human Race, we have gotten ourselves involved with a chaotic phenomenon which lead to a decision of letting Valerie fight off the devil. Even though Lukas appeared, he couldn't even go there, so we didn't have a choice."

She glares carefully and looks down. It was Lyrica who was speaking on the stage, and a whole new Valkyrie gathered around her. Lukas was there too, so did something happen while she was asleep?

No, but they are talking about her.

"Because of our uselessness, and our lack of solution, we lost many of our beloved sisters including Diana, our youngest recruited mortal soldier who came from Armenia as a packing crew for our team, she was indeed a brave and courageous child. She helped many of our Valkyrie restore to their former glory, but she who helped stop Valerie lost her life in the process."

There was silence after the mention of her name. Even Valerie's eyes widen at the mention of that name. Diana is just a child, she hasn't yet reached her teenage years but she died?

Diana is the youngest crew living in the laboratory. When she first came to this place, everything was lively and bright. She brought brightness upon those heartless metals, and gave them hope to smile.

It was her efforts that activated the sense of every Valkyries' emotions. She played a big part of their lives and hers as well.

Two years ago, it was the time Valerie was so cold and mean to everyone. It was that same year as well when she literally tried to die in the battlefield but fate didn't let her take her own life, so during her recovery, she met this tiny child who would often cry at the sight of Valerie's blood.

It's not so often to see a child in the laboratory, but she was still a child back then. Valerie was still a child, so she understood the sense of being the only child left alone.

At first it was an empathy, but it slowly grew to her as a hobby or even affection. Those affection that Diana gave her was warm, and soft that she couldn't let go.

To think of a child...

"We wouldn't blame anyone for this tragedy, it will always be seen as unfortunate events. As a honor to her glorious and heroic action, we will show our greatest gratitude to her service as a friend for all of us!"

No!? She thought, it can't be... Her thoughts had scrambled to many of them, either blaming herself or even confused of what was happening.

"She will be remembered!"

The thoughts of what had truly happened must have gotten to her thoughts. This affected herself as she lost her strength on her legs and she fell on her knees. The sound of her echoing knee that drops on the floor makes everyone look.

Valkyries have a sensitive hearing, one sound can make them look. Even if that sound isn't visible to human ears or even mortals. The glass made of transparent blue gemstone railings was the only thing that made her visible to everyone.

"Valerie?" Lyrica's eyes widened. The sight of Valerie's emotions had fallen loose.

Her eyes widened yet her face went pallid. Her mouth opened as if she's saying something, only then she held her head and tears were falling from her eyes. It's like her emotions had gone berserk, Lyrica couldn't understand.

She seemed to be screaming in pain but there was no voice or rather, her voice was deeply hidden. It couldn't be right?

No way!

"Is that frozen heart? No, why is she crying?" As confused as Lukas wanted to understand, he still couldn't grasp it.

"Even angels whose hearts have been demolished will show emotion at the death of someone they truly care about."

Lukas looked at Lyrica who was only watching Valerie on the second floor, while Valerie was crying her feelings off. It seems that Lyrica and the others lack the emotions of comforting someone.

Is this the reason they didn't wait for Valerie to wake up before commencing a ceremony? He thought and asked himself as he breathed out.

"At this point, she'll break her mouth instead," said Lukas.

He never would comfort anyone in his entire life, but there's just those moments he does. One of them might be now, the reason? Empathy? Pity? No, it's a self reserve reason for a man doing something he finds it necessary.

He kneeled down to match Valerie and he sighs. "This doesn't fit you," he said and looked at her hands on her head.

"I don't know how to comfort anyone, but don't let yourself get swayed by your emotions."

Valerie remained crying, as if she didn't hear Lukas voice from the lack of reality inside of her. It's not so often he'll get this side of her, so it's very serious as she's come to show her emotions like this.

No, maybe it's cold after all... "There will be many truths you'll uncover soon enough, please be strong to avoid these challenges and make it through."

He's wishing for her good health and her future as well. He can't comfort her, so he'll stay by her side until she no longer feels like crying.
