Over the preceding three days, security measures under the leadership of Arkin and Mathew in the Archduchy had escalated to their highest point. Veterans from the allied army had congregated in Lanark, enticed by the prospect of further glory in the battle against the warlocks and the promise of a prosperous life in which their social status held no significance. Simultaneously, the maids and guards at both estates were nearing the completion of the task of transferring Duchess von Conradie's possessions to the Archduchess's estate.
