That night I lay in bed, wide awake and unable to relax. Staring at the ceiling and praying.
No sign. No word. Nothing from Zara. Nothing.
The thought ran cold in my veins.
I'd kept myself distracted. Kept my body moving and my mind full all day.
I'd played the part that was needed, and seen the results. Even Stark couldn't deny that I had done what was needed.
The rulers who'd arrived were all convinced I was being dramatic and playing for power. But oddly, it seemed to be working in my favor. Two of the Conclave had approached me quietly with veiled promises of alliance if I could really take the Physicists.
Of course, the promises were veiled, because they still wanted to see Zara actually take control. But there was no doubt everyone was already a firm believer in her supernatural power. Something that we would have laughed about if circumstances had been different.
