I gave him a look. "You saw him… he's not interested in me, David. He's in love with her."
"Which means the one thing we were sure of is now uncertain."
I sighed. "It's what we've always wanted! To know he's not just angling to get me alone!"
"No, instead he might be angling for your father—to take you for him. Lizbeth is still an unknown quantity, Zara! What if he's taken up with her to cement his own position? What if she's coming for you?"
I snorted. "I could take her."
"Zara," he tried to pretend he wasn't amused, but I saw the glint of humor that broke through.
"David," I said, mocking his serious tone.
We stared at each other and I felt the anger easing out of him. But he was still tense.
