Emory stared right at me and something passed between us. I wasn't even sure what it was except that I found myself wanting to believe her. Then mentally backpedaling furiously.
"If you were such a good friend… if you were protecting me… why were you such a bitch that night at the ball? Why did you try to take David? Why were you acting so entitled while we were gone when apparently you knew we were getting married?"
For the first time I saw shame flash on her face. She looked down at where she hugged her own knees and her frown got deeper.
"Because I hated what I was about to do… so I decided to hate you instead."
I chewed on my lip. There was no doubt this Emory had been humbled. And she was scared. Far more scared than I'd ever seen her.
Apparently she'd been down here almost the whole time I was gone. What a fall from grace to be grinding on the King one day, then down here a few days later.
