I stood in the stable courtyard watching Ash saddle our horses. He'd insisted that I stay outside in the sunlight where I was easily seen, and he had the groom bring the animals out, but he wouldn't allow anyone else to prepare them.
I'd asked him why the first time we did this, and he'd explained that it was easy to sabotage bridles and saddles to put a person in danger. A common ploy by enemies who might want to get you out and away from the castle, then incapacitate you.
I'd been alarmed at the time.
"You really think people are out there trying to hurt me?"
He'd shrugged, but his face was serious. "I certainly hope not. Your father's people are very loyal. But it's my job to mitigate any potential threat. So, I will do the tacking up, and you'll watch and we'll both be more certain that you're safe when we ride."
It had been a month since he arrived, and this was our habit now. This was how it always happened.
