The moment I'd seen Fireknight at attention against the wall, jaw tight and eyes fixed on the room I knew she must have arrived.
It was petty to take pleasure in striding past him freely into the crowd, knowing he'd wish to be at her side, but couldn't. But I wasn't above it.
But as soon as he was out of sight and the crowd began to part to let me through, I just prayed I could find her quickly. My heart was racing, hammering against my ribs, like an excited child. It should have been ridiculous. But it was thrilling.
Then I caught sight of her and my breath stopped entirely.
She stood next to Lizbeth, who was smiling broadly, stunning in a shimmering, silver-green dress that took away any breath I might have had left.
