It was sheer luck that David's trainers had taught him how to build and keep a fire—apparently survival of the King depended on heat and the capacity to dry clothing… but not food?
Shaking my head at the odd forms of masculine bullshit in this world, I assured him that I could figure something out for breakfast and encouraged him to get the fire going again as it was nothing but glowing coals this morning.
Throwing David's robe around me in case there were errant servants walking past the windows, I dug around in the kitchen and found a paring knife to cut up some of the fruit, and a long fork that allowed me to toast bread near the growing fire, which I buttered heavily. Then, when the cottage was cozy, cuddled up on the couch to eat from the same plate.
