"It's healing well," Mardie said with a satisfied nod. She held the blankets high, away from my leg and was touching it gently. I winced a couple of times, but the truth was, I felt like I could have walked to my room if I'd had David or Ash's arm to lean on. The skin under that strange mesh-made-of-light was still shiny, but more pink than red this morning.
It seemed impossible that I'd almost died. But the hovering tension in everyone around me made it clear that what had happened while I was unconscious was no small thing.
