Glossary

Hi! This is a glossary / info page with explanations for certain concepts that I want to go into more detail on, or that wouldn't make sense for a character in the story to explain like the days of the week (as most characters in world would obviously already know this). I will likely update this every 10 or so chapters, maybe more often, maybe less.

Leave a comment if you want anything added here, I don't mind clearing up confusion for any readers :)

***

Manthalan -- An ancient language that was phased out at the start of the current Era. It is most commonly seen in names for creatures and places.

A few examples:

- Ngaiyah, meaning God.

- Kamah, meaning Arcana.

- Fehtt, meaning boat.

- Levjottun, from the words Levar (Horror) and Jottuni (Inhuman), meaning Inhuman Horror.

- Levjottyr-dal, from the words Levar (Horror), Jottuni (Inhuman), and Tyrga (Cursed), as well as Dal (the number 8).

-(I have indeed actually written a full language... If people do start to read this, I may eventually make a discord server where I can upload the writing system.)

***

Malsatan -- The modern language that was created to standardize speech across Malsata at the start of the current Era.

***

Cybriil -- A language used in prayer and arcana to emphasize important natural concepts. Cybriil is made up of runes found when moonlight refracts through waves. Very few people know more than a couple words in Cybriil, usually only knowing 'sea' and 'luck' to pray for safety on voyages. If one emphasizes the wrong words in Cybriil, a prayer can have poor or even negative results.

***

Malsata - The name of the world, used since the beginning of the current era. Before, it was known as Mantithal, this is where the name 'Manthalan' comes from.

Great islands - There are six great islands: Yol, Freta, Moin, Palk, Nauv, and Teka, each are pulled by a Dweller.

Dweller - A giant monster, similar to Levjottun but not hostile. They are chained underneath the islands, pulling them around. The dwellers are what caused the eight calm regions of the sea, as they scare off Levjottun within their 'territory'.

Regions - The regions are distinct areas of Sea that have distinctly different climates.

Calm Regions - The eight regions that are occupied by dwellers, protecting them from Levjottun. Nauv and Moin both occupy more than one region.

Cursed Regions (Deadly Seas) - The eight regions occupied by the Levjottyr-dal (Meaning "8 Cursed Inhuman Horrors" in Manthalan)

Channels - The channels are the unclaimed waters in between regions, like buffer zones.

***

Harvester - An occupation unique to Yol. Harvesters go on voyages to small islands around the world, looking for new or important natural gases and materials. They then bring them back to Yol where they can be mixed with arcane materials to make arcane gases.

Farseer - A person born with a mutation that causes constant pain in their eyes. Seemingly in exchange for their suffering, they recieve one of eight kinds of Farsight... More on this at a later date.

There are 5 days in a week and 9 months in a year.

The islands have different weather cycles rather than seasons, depending on the region they are in.

The moon is partially shattered, the reason is a secret for now :)
