Chapter 31 - Friendly Spar

Shinon and Rico stood in knee-deep water, facing each other with fiery machetes in hand. The sun had just begun to rise, casting a warm golden light over the tranquil stream between them. The air was thick with anticipation as the two warriors prepared to spar, their eyes locked on each other with unwavering focus.

Shinon wore a sleeveless shirt that revealed his toned muscles, and his long black hair was tied back in a tight bun. On the other hand, Rico was slightly shorter but no less formidable.

He had a compact build with wiry strength, and his dark brown eyes glinted with determination. He wore a fitted tunic that allowed for easy movement, and his short-cropped hair was the colour of midnight.

The water flowed around them, the sound of it rushing against the rocks filling the air. Shinon raised his machete, the flames from the blade reflecting in his eyes. Rico mirrored his movements, and the two of them circled each other, the water splashing around their feet.

The sound of rushing water filled the air as the two warriors lunged at each other with lightning speed. Their machetes clashed with a resounding clang, sending sparks flying in all directions.

With a sudden burst of movement, Shinon lunged forward, his blade aimed at Rico's head. But Rico was quick to react, blocking the attack with his machete. The clash of metal rang out, and the water around them churned with the force of their movements.

Shinon spun away from Rico, his machete tracing a fiery arc through the air. Rico dodged to the side, narrowly avoiding the blade, and countered with a quick strike. Shinon parried the attack, their blades locking together once again.

"You're getting slow, Shinon," Rico taunted, a smirk playing at the corners of his lips.

Shinon grinned back, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "I'm just getting warmed up, old man."

"Old man? I'm barely 24!"

For a moment, the two of them were locked in a fierce struggle, each pushing against the other with all their strength. The water flowed around them, and the sound of their breathing filled the air.

But then Shinon broke away, his blade sweeping down towards Rico's leg. Rico jumped back, avoiding the strike, and then launched a counter-attack. Shinon parried the blow, and the two continued their deadly dance.

They moved with fluid grace, their movements precise and calculated as they parried, blocked, and counter-attacked. Their machetes glowed with fiery energy, a result of the elemental fire.

Each strike was infused with intense heat, creating a dazzling display of flames that danced and flickered in the fading light.

The water stream added an additional challenge to their sparring match, and they had to maintain their balance on the slippery rocks while dodging each other's attacks.

It required them to have physical prowess and mental focus as they anticipated each other's moves and countered them with lightning-fast reflexes.

Their battle raged on, their movements becoming a blur of steel and fire. They traded blows with equal ferocity, their machetes leaving trails of flames in the air as they clashed and spun. The water around them boiled and hissed as their fiery attacks met the cool, flowing stream.

Shinon's eyes glittered with determination as he launched a powerful overhead strike, aiming to catch Rico off guard. But Rico quickly reacted, sidestepping the attack and countering with a swift thrust towards Shinon's midsection. Shinon blocked just in time, but the force of the blow knocked him off balance, and he stumbled back into the water.

Rico pressed his advantage, unleashing a series of rapid strikes, aiming to push Shinon back further.

But Shinon dug deep, channelling the fire imbued in his machete to create a blazing barrier that repelled Rico's attacks.

He regained his footing and retaliated with a fierce flurry of slashes, forcing Rico to step back and defend.

Their battle continued for what seemed like an eternity, the intensity of their attacks never wavering. Sweat trickled down their brows, mingling with the water from the stream as they pushed their bodies to the limit.

The water around them was now a blur, the force of their movements causing waves to crash against the rocks. Shinon and Rico continued their dance, each searching for an opening, a weakness in the other's defences.

As the sun rose above the horizon, casting the world in its bright glow, both warriors found themselves locked in a stalemate. They stood facing each other, their machetes crossed in a deadlock, their breathing heavy and laboured.

A moment of mutual respect passed between them as they recognized each other's skill and tenacity. They had pushed each other to their limits, and it was clear that neither could gain an advantage over the other.

With a nod of acknowledgement, they simultaneously stepped back, disengaging from their stance. They lowered their machetes, the flames flickering but never dying down, and exchanged a nod of mutual respect.

"It's a draw," Shinon said, his voice hoarse from exertion.

Rico grinned, his chest heaving with exhaustion. "Indeed. Well fought, Shinon."

For a moment, the two of them just lay there, catching their breath and letting the water relax their tensed muscles. The water flowed around them, the sound of it soothing in the aftermath of their violent dance.

Finally, Rico sat up, staring at Shinon. "It was only a draw because you didn't use your full strength. I saw your fight with the Raiders... you did not use those black tentacles of yours."

"It was a spar to improve our skills, not to assert dominance," Shinon replied with a smile. "Moreover, since it was a spar, it wouldn't be right if I used my abilities when you don't possess any."

Rico nodded, admiring the machetes Shinon had given to him. He had no idea Shinon was a blacksmith or that he could create such great weapons within hours.

If only they had met earlier, the rest wouldn't have had to leave the settlement for the sake of living on. Rico shook his head, not wanting to well on the past. However, he knew he had made the right choice by following Shinon.
