Volume 2 Chapter 39: Crescent Blood Wave

Along with its appearance a cracking sound start to be heard though out the whole room.

Carmilla already have a guess on what kind of element Vespera have use base on it's magic circle's color and now with the sounds it make that is awfully similar toward an anime Vanessa made her watch.

Vanessa then said that it is one of the big 3 which she have no idea what was Vanessa even talking about, back then she was thinking to herself' 'What in earth is the meaning of the big 3?, is it some kind of band', was her thoughts back then.

But she didn't voice those thoughts out since she know that the conversation they are having back then would never end so she just nods along and agrees on what was Vanessa was saying back then with a polite smile.

============================

After a few minutes in the conversation and a series of questions from Vanessa, Vanessa caught her just nodding along without fully engaging or understanding the conversation.

After a while of nodding and agreeing, Vanessa began to suspect that she was simply nodding and agreeing without actually paying attention to what was being said.

So, Vanessa would occasionally interject with nonsensical statements during their conversation, to which she would simply nod and agree without fully grasping the content.

So, as a form of punishment, Vanessa arranged a sleepover at their house and made her watch an anime featuring ninjas. However, unlike traditional ninjas, the ones in this anime possessed elemental powers similar to those seen in "Avatar: The Last Airbender."

She was coerced into watching the ninja anime titled "Naruto" for the entire night. After dinner and completing all her chores, Vanessa also assisted to hasten the process. The two of them continued watching until they eventually fell asleep.

Since the following day was a Saturday, she didn't have much choice but to continue watching with Vanessa. Surprisingly, she began to enjoy the series, she didn't mind spending the entire day watching it. However, her condition was to watch it while comfortably lying in her bed and in English dub, as she was too lazy to read subtitles.

Initially, Vanessa insisted on watching the anime with English subtitles and in its original version (Japanese audio). However, she made it clear to Vanessa that unless they watched it in English dub, she would simply fall asleep and ignore the show.

Reluctantly, Vanessa relented, but not without a few grumbles about how "watching it with English subtitles and in Japanese is more authentic."

She had no idea why Vanessa was so insistent on watching it in Japanese with English subtitles. In her mind, she questioned the difference between English subtitles and English dub, and pondered if Vanessa truly wanted authenticity, why not learn Japanese to understand it without subtitles.

In a sarcastic tone, she voiced her thoughts for Vanessa to hear, but to her surprise, Vanessa reacted differently from what she had expected.

Vanessa first looked at her for a few seconds before grabbing both of her shoulders and saying, "You're a genius! Why didn't I think of that right away?"

After that incident, Vanessa began taking Japanese language (Nihongo) lessons after school, starting when they were about 7 years old. Over time, Vanessa became fluent in speaking, reading, and writing in Japanese.

Sometimes she would come across Vanessa watching anime without English subtitles or reading manga or novels in Japanese.

Carmilla snapped out of her reminiscence when the cracking sound of Vespera's spell grew louder. At first, she thought it was a spear, but upon closer observation, she noticed the handle was thinner and longer than a regular spear, making it more akin to a javelin.

That's when it suddenly vanished before their eyes, flying swiftly towards the target, leaving behind a trail of the same light blue hue as the lightning javelin.

Before the three of them could trace its trajectory or the light blue trail, they heard a faint explosion emanating from the direction of the target.

The three of them swiftly turned their gaze towards the target and witnessed the lightning javelin lodged in the bullseye, with only half of it protruding out. Surrounding the target were several cracks of varying sizes and depths, radiating out from the impact point of the lightning javelin.

Vespera: "Another 100 points for me, I guess."

Vespera remarked confidently.

After Vespera made her statement, the lightning javelin began to disperse. Carmilla moved forward but was suddenly halted by Vespera.

She cast a questioning glance at Vespera, silently asking, "Why did you stop me?"

Vespera: "Sorry about that. Just wait for a sec, okay? Let me just fix the target first," Vespera explained.

Vespera began to approach the wall where the damaged target was located. She placed her hand on the damaged bullseye, which was full of cracks and scorched due to the heat of her lightning spell.

A brown magic circle enveloped the damaged target, and shortly after, the magic circle vanished, revealing a perfectly intact target.

Vespera turned around to face Carmilla, indicating that it was now her turn, before speaking.

Vespera: "Okay, all done. You can take your turn now."

After hearing Vespera's words, Carmilla took her position but decided not to use a bow and arrow. Instead, she chose to cast a different spell that had just come to her mind.

In front of Carmilla, a magic circle materialized, matching her size. After a few moments, she swung her left arm horizontally, causing a crescent blood wave to emerge from the magic circle following her motion.

Her spell bore a resemblance to the sword qi wave used by sword cultivators in the novels she had read in the past.

It soared in a straight line towards the target. Given its larger size compared to an arrow, the crescent blood wave struck not just the bullseye but also the entire middle section of the target, slicing through the three outer rings as well.

Her attack even affected a few inches of the wall outside the designated target area due to its wide range and impact.

A few seconds later, the crescent blood wave eventually ran out of mana and dissipated. This revealed a deep cut in the target's bullseye. As the cut extended away from the bullseye, it gradually became shallower and shallower.

After evaluating the damage her spell caused to the target, Carmilla decided to determine the cost of the crescent blood wave, or "Blood Slash" as a temporary short name, by accessing her own status screen.
