Chereads / Journey of the Moonlight Swordsman / Chapter 80 - 30-meter dash

Chapter 80 - 30-meter dash

Klaus led Finn out of Sophie's room and to the fourth floor, where Jonathan's office was located.

On the way there, they also stopped in a bathroom where Finn could wash his hand, which still had blue paint on it.

"Finn! You are finally here!"

When they arrived, Jonathan, who was signing some documents on his desk, stood up and went to welcome Finn.

He gave him a friendly hug and patted his back, so Finn returned the hug.

"Yes. Klaus led me here."

Finn released himself from the hug and looked at Jonathan, who was wearing an expensive suit like always.

This time the office wasn't empty, and there were six people sitting at their desks, dealing with some documents.

They stopped working because they were surprised to see their stoic and strict boss welcome someone with a smile and a hug.

"Everyone, out!"

Jonathan went towards the sofas, and with two words leaving his mouth, all the employees that were checking the documents got up from their seats and left the office.

Finn also sat down on a sofa across from Jonathan, and Klaus stood next to them, waiting for his master's orders.

"Do you want something alcoholic to drink?"

Jonathan asked with a smile because he still remembered how he made Finn become wasted, and to him it was a funny memory that he would recall from time to time.

"No, thank you. My parents were already upset last time, and I almost threw up on Sophie while she was carrying me to the helicopter, so I will pass."

But Finn quickly shook his head, rejecting Jonathan's offer.

"Hahaha! Don't worry. When I was young, I also threw up on Estelle, and she still loves me nonetheless."

Laughing, Jonathan recalled his past.

"Right… So, why did you call me here?"

Finn quickly asked the most important question.

Noticing how nervous Finn was acting, Jonathan chuckled and waved his hand.

"Don't worry, it's not because Sophie joined your guild instead of mine. I have already hired a powerful player who was happy to become the guild master."

Jonathan then leaned forward and looked at Finn.

"The reason I wanted to meet you is because I wanted to know if you were strong enough to protect Sophie."

Tapping his index finger on the table, he explained his reasoning.

"I know that you have won the tournament and you can protect her in the game, but I wanted to test your skills outside of the game too, so I prepared a test for you."

"A test?"

Finn was confused because he thought the reason Jonathan called him into his office was because he was trying to use him for his guild.

"Yes. Let's go to the gym."

Jonathan got up and gestured for Finn to follow him.

So Finn also got up and walked next to Jonathan, while Klaus walked behind them because he was a butler who wasn't on an equal standing as his master, so he wasn't allowed to walk next to him.

They soon entered the elevator and went to the first floor.

Leaving the elevator, Finn remembered that there was a dining hall there, but because the floor was so big, there were a lot of other rooms that he didn't know of.

One of them was the gym, where the family bodyguards trained their bodies and honed their skills.

It was called a gym, but it was actually a huge room, with half of it filled with weightlifting equipment and the other half having boxing rings meant for sparring.

When Finn entered the gym, he noticed that there were men who were working out and some who were sparring with each other.

He was happy that he would be able to possibly train with Jonathan's bodyguards because he wanted to learn fighting techniques from them.

As soon as Jonathan entered, they all stopped what they were doing and ran to greet him.

With a salute, they stood straight and waited for Jonathan's orders.

"This is Finn, and I will be testing him today. We will be testing his agility, stamina, strength, and fighting prowess."

All the men looked at Finn, measuring him with their eyes.

They believed that he was too thin for them to even test him, but none of them said anything because they didn't want to unintentionally displease their employer by mocking Finn's strength.

One of the men who looked older than the rest stepped forward, and Jonathan turned to look at Finn.

"This is David. He is the bodyguard captain, and he has helped me create the tests for you."

Finn didn't want to come off as rude, so he slightly bowed his head to show respect and greeted the man in front of him.

"Nice to meet you, sir."

The bodyguards thought that Finn would be a stuck-up rich kid, but they were pleasantly surprised to see him being polite towards their captain.

This had already made a lot of them change their opinion of Finn, and they started to view him as a nice kid. They still thought that he was weak, but at least he was nice.

"It is my pleasure, Finn."

David also nodded his head and started explaining the exercises that he had created.

"To test your agility and speed, I have prepared a thirty-meter dash, and you will have to get a better time than the average of our bodyguards."

"Haha-"

One of the bodyguards found it funny that someone would think that Finn could be faster than them, but with one cold glare from David, he immediately shut his mouth and looked down.

David then looked back at Finn and continued talking.

"I will tell you about the next test after this one is done, and the thirty-meter dash will be held outside on the running track."

Before they went outside, Finn had to change his clothes into sportswear so that he could run at his fastest speed.

After he changed his baggy clothes, his muscles became visible, and the bodyguards stopped underestimating him.

David then turned around and started leading the way.

Jonathan and Finn walked behind him, and the bodyguards also followed closely behind.

Arriving outside, Finn noticed a running track with a red surface.

"It is four hundred meters long, but we will use only a part of it to measure your time."

David then showed Finn the start of the track, which consisted of a white line, and he also showed Finn the ending line of the 30-meter dash.

But Finn wasn't the first to begin. The bodyguards were.

So they started warming up to do their best in front of their employer.

While they were warming up, Sophie and Estelle came outside to watch the test.

They stood a little further away from the crowd, and they only came to look because Finn was there, but seeing the women motivated the bodyguards to do even better.

Few of them worked in that mansion just so they could look at the beautiful women that lived there, and now they could show off in front of them, so they wanted to use this opportunity and leave their opponents in the dust.

Finn didn't really care about Estelle, but he waved at Sophie with a smile.

Sophie waved back, and the other men thought she was waving at them, but in her eyes, they were like specks of dust.

The men then started doing the thirty-meter sprint, and the results didn't differ much.

They were always between 4.1 and 4.4 seconds.

David explained to Finn that below 4 seconds was an excellent result and above 4.6 seconds was a very poor result.

Finn found it a little funny that 0.6 seconds made such a difference, but then he remembered that every millisecond could change the outcome of a fight, so he also wanted to do his best.

The men soon finished running, and because they were all well trained, none of them were out of breath from a short run like that.

It was also finally Finn's turn to run, and unlike the bodyguards who ran in groups, he was to run alone.

The bodyguards could run in groups because the finish line had a laser scanner with a camera that would measure their time with perfect accuracy, but Finn was the reason why they were doing the test, so he was running alone.

After he stretched his body, he went to the starting line and prepared to run.

He lowered his torso a little, but he remained standing. This was the position that all the bodyguards started in.

Finn didn't know the average time, but if he were to guess, it would be around 4.2 seconds, so he had to beat that.

If he were to run this track in his previous life, he would most likely not even complete it because he would trip and fall midway, but now that he had an upgraded body, he stood a chance.

So he focused solely on the finish line, ignoring everything around him.

Finn couldn't hear nor see the others anymore, and the only thing he cared about was reaching the finish line.

David didn't have to tell Finn to start running because the starting line also had a sensor that would start the timer when the person crossed the line.

Everyone watched Finn in intrigue, wanting to see his time and if it was better than the time of the average bodyguard.

WHOOSH

Finn suddenly dashed forward.

He felt the hard ground under his feet as he used all his leg muscles to run as fast as he could.

As he ran, he felt the wind resistance trying to slow him down, but he pushed on.

It was only a short dash, but with every step he took, he felt the fibers of his leg muscles contract and relax.

When he finally reached the finish line, everyone held their breath, waiting to find out the result that would be shown on the monitor above the scanner.

Finn also stopped after reaching the finish line and looked at the monitor because he didn't know if he ran fast enough to beat the trained bodyguards.

He did have a cheat that made his body stronger because of his in-game stats, but those bodyguards took care of their bodies by working out every day, so he wasn't sure if he was faster than them.

But once the numbers appeared, Finn first felt his heart skip a beat, and then a wide smile appeared on his face.
