Chapter 36 - Chapter 36

I spent the night again at Viktor's. I knew that at some point in time I would have to go back to my own house and my own life, but today, I was just not ready. There was a feeling of safety that I was not willing to give up on… especially talking about the past.

Truth be told, I didn't know if he wanted me to leave or stay, but I wasn't really giving him a choice when after our 'talk' I went back to my room to sleep. On the bright side, however, I guess my theory about the 'talk' was blown out of the water when I didn't die…

Yay me!

I returned to work the next day feeling relaxed enough to take on whatever New York City could throw at me…Or so I thought.

It turned out, I shouldn't have been that worried about what New York would throw at me, it was Lucas that I should have been paying attention to. That stupid Mutt.

Apparently, that wolf had a burr up his… and was cranky about the deaths of the rogue wolves in Central Park. I mean, I could understand if they were members of his pack, but they were rogue wolves that were killing humans.

They signed their own death warrant with that action alone. Lucas had to grow up and get over it.

I sat down at my desk and looked up to see the very worried face of Mathew White.

"Relax," I said. To say that I was upset with his worry would be a lie, and we all know I can't do that. I was happy knowing that there was another person worrying about me. It used to be just Mike, but now the number was up to three!

"Are you sure you are ok?" Matt demanded, looking me up and down to make sure I was scratch free. After a day of recovery, there was not a single mark on me.

"Right as rain! They just asked me a few questions and then Viktor found me in the middle of nowhere," I explained, keeping to the truth, but not freaking him out at the same time.

"That's good," he sighed. "But I need to tell you that Lucas is not happy with you."

"With me?!?" I asked, confused.

"Yeah, it has to do with the wolves in Central Park—" he started, looking around the bullpen to make sure that no one was able to hear our conversation.

I held up my hand to stop him, "If he has an issue with it, he should have taken control of the situation before others were involved," I said, my face showing how unimpressed I truly was.

"You have no right to tell me how to run my packs," came a growled voice from behind me. I raised an eyebrow at Matt, a bit cranky that he didn't give me a heads up, and then I spun around in my chair to face one very pissed-off surfer boy.

"Then maybe you should have done something before it fell on me to do it."

"You are nothing more than a human, with a very short lifespan. If you want to live a full life, stay out of a monster's business," said Lucas, leaning forward and trapping me between him and my chair.

If he thought he was intimidating, he was sorely mistaken.

I had a silversmith weapon in my possession, and that made me the scariest person in the room right now.

"Please remember that you are currently in a police precinct, surrounded by police officers, threatening a police officer. There are a lot of humans here and if you don't want to make your 'other' presence known, you need to back off… now," I calmly under my breath. I was getting tired of this subject.

I had already noticed the looks of my coworkers, wondering if they needed to get involved. I signaled to them that I was fine and they returned to their work. For the most part. Mike was standing in the doorway of his office, watching everything.

Lucas took a deep breath in as he straightened his posture, presumably to calm himself down, and then he smelled me. "You smell like Van Helsing," he growled, his teeth starting to poke through.

"Probably because I have spent the past few days at his house," I said with a bright grin. "And, if I am not mistaken, his name is Viktor Singer, CEO of Knights Securities. Please remember these things. I would hate for your to lose your head because you forgot a small detail like that."

"He will not be able to protect you, human. And it might be worth a 32-year rest if it meant that you have met with an unfortunate accident," said Lucas, the look on his face told me all I needed to know.

"Sure, Wolfie, you keep telling yourself that," I replied. Now, on a side note… was that the smartest thing I have ever said? Probably not…but it sure was fun.

With another growl, Lucas turned around and stormed out of the bullpen.

The most confusing part for me was… how did he keep getting in in the first place?!?

---------

The rest of the day went smoother than the beginning, but poor Matt though kept looking at me like a kicked puppy dog.

"You know I can't talk about it," said Matt, pacing in front of me when we were out on a call.

"I know," I nodded, writing down my notes.

"But you know he is going to…"

"I know," I replied again. Honestly, let him come. It could not have been more obvious what his attentions were when he left earlier today.

I understood pack mentality and pack hierarchy. I know that Matt had no way of telling me what exactly Lucas had planned for me, and he had no reason to take my side over his alpha's, even if I was his partner.

A good smack on the nose made him snap out of it and, luckily for us, all the murders that happened today were of the human variety. Much less monsters involved that way.

Feeling good about myself, I left work and walked towards my home. I assumed that if Lucas was going to do something to me, he wouldn't do it on the same day that he threatened me.

My mind wandered to a place I was not expecting it to go and I… was feeling a bit… weird not to be going to Viktor's. Maybe I missed that bed more than I thought.

Maybe I should have gone to his house. It might have saved me a slit throat.

Maybe.
