Chapter 27 - Chapter 27

Mathew White turned and looked at me… surprise was clear on his face.

I think I'm insulted?

"What?" I asked, wondering what was going on. Was it really that much of a big deal to have a Beta?

"You're an Alpha?" White asked, confused.

"If the title fits," I laughed. Then I turned to Mike. "What is the plan for today, Bossman?"

"You're still calling him Bossman?!?"

Wolves tended to be slow on the uptake, especially when it came to the tricky thing that was pack hierarchy.

"Why wouldn't I?" I said. "I might be Head, but no one outside of this room and the Van Helsing knows that. I can only assume that Lucas will be informed as soon as you leave this room. If you didn't already text him."

The guilty look on his face gave me the answer to that unasked question.

"Here, he is Staff Sergeant Mike Volasko, my boss. For that reason, he will be Bossman here, and Bossman in my House. Outsiders need to keep their nose out of where it doesn't belong."

"Can I know what your House is called? There hasn't been a new House since the original six were created."

"You may not," I answered, shrugging my shoulders. In the strictest sense of the word, my House was not new, I just had humans take over the name for a few centuries.

"Anyways…" Mike started, turning out attention back to him. "It's about The Specialist."

"What about him?" Asked White. He was not one of the regulars dealing with the Magnificent Seven, so I gave him a quick rundown of what has been happening so far.

"He is a human that has been taking weapons from Viktor and selling them on the black market," I said.

"How the Hell did he get his hands on Van Helsing's weapons? There is no way he is getting it from the source."

"See!" I turned to Mike. "He gets it!"

Mike just smiled and nodded his head. What? It's not like I was wrong, Kowalski just wasn't willing to listen.

"Ah, is that one of the reasons why I am your new partner?" White asked.

"Not the only one, but yeah. I spent a day trying to explain to Kowalski why Knights Securities was not involved, only for him to go to Viktor himself and demand his records."

White cringed. "I'm assuming that didn't go well."

"Nope!" I agreed.

"Anyways, back to the conversation, children. Mr. Singer has passed on the information that he has managed to gather on the issue, and it appears that the one that is selling the weapons is one of the government agents that is responsible for receiving them."

"Makes sense," said White, nodding his head. "It would be easier to sell the weapons before they become logged into the government's system as being received. Then, when they are noticed missing or turn up on the black market, it is on Knights and not the government. Smart plan."

"What now?" I asked, turning my attention to Mike. That man always had all the answers and I needed to know what the next step was going to be.

"As of last night, I submitted the report to the CIA and they said that they would send an agent to assist us," he said, handing both Matt and myself a copy of the report that the CIA had.

"So, the Feds are involved. What happens next, Bossman?" I asked looking at the man in front of me.

"The CIA agent will be arriving sometime today and wants to be read in on all that we have done. Viktor refuses to deal with him on his own, so if there needs to be any interactions with Knights Securities, you two need to be there."

"Fun, fun," I said, the sarcasm dripping from my voice. Mike just gave me a tired smile. He didn't like the idea of the Feds being here any more than I did.

--------

"So, you're an Alpha," Matt said as soon as we left Mike's office.

"I am," I replied absentmindedly. "Is that going to be a problem for you? I know you guys and hierarchy."

"Nah, you don't smell like an Alpha," he laughed.

I gave him a side-eyed look, wondering where he was going with this and if that was him questioning my status.

I might not have wanted my own House, but that does not mean that I will allow anyone to disrespect me.

"I won't ask you to keep a secret from your Alpha, but for that reason, I will not be telling you information about my House, including its name."

Matt's head snapped back as if I had just punched him in the face.

"It is okayed by the Van Helsing?" He asked.

I could understand his confusion. There had never been a House that had not announced its name, but we have already established that I am special.

I nodded my head as we got to my desk.

"Alright then. I'll let my Alpha know. You do realize that if he asks me to get information from you, I have no choice in the matter… right?" Matt was worried, and I knew that if Lucas asked him, he would have to obey, potentially putting our partnership at risk.

I smiled, turning on my computer. "Even if you ask, I don't have to answer. We are all good."

He signed in relief and moved into the desk across from me.

---------

According to the schedule, the CIA was not supposed to arrive until 8 pm, leaving me plenty of time to catch Matt up on the case.

But then again, when did anything ever go according to schedule?

It was only two hours after our meeting with Mike when Matt's head snapped around to the entrance of our bullpen.

"Wolf," he growled under his breath.

'Fuck me,' I thought to myself. How was it that I managed to go hundreds of years without anything monster related, and all of a sudden, I was surrounded?

Or maybe I was always surrounded, I just didn't have the nose to identify each House. Huh, having a wolf as a partner might just come in handy.

By the door stood a man that I had never seen before in a black suit and tie. His dark brown hair was slicked back and his eyes scanned the room before landing on Matt for a second and then continuing.

"Now, if he doesn't scream CIA, I don't know what does," I joked to my partner.

He gave me a half smile before giving me even more bad news, "He is a Beta, and we are approaching a full moon."

Crap on a stick. I really did not have the patience for a dominance fight.

"Then we better deal with The Specialist fast and get him out of our city as quickly as we can."
