Chereads / Echoes Of The Colossus / Chapter 13 - Obligation

Chapter 13 - Obligation

"Invisible?" asked Arlan skeptically.

It was true that many unimaginable things had happened in a very short time, but an invisible monster was something else.

"That's what I said" Tristan replied.

"Then how did you know that one charger would be enough to take one of them out?"

Tristan shook his head.

"Actually, not all of them are invisible, there are two types of monsters. The visible ones are the ones that are killed by a discharge from a charger, based on that information we assumed that the invisible ones have the same resistance to our weapons"

"This information is not reliable at all..." muttered Arlan with a distant look.

The woman silently sighed and leaned back on her chair.

"But it's what we have"

Arlan couldn't deny that even though he hadn't seen the monsters that roamed the island with his own eyes, he understood that it wasn't easy to gather information. Not when most of the monsters were invisible and deadly.

The woman yawned and got up from the table.

"I'm going to sleep, I'm tired enough to think about our problems"

The woman walked to the kitchen exit and paused before leaving.

"…And welcome to hell" she said before walking out and disappearing into the dark corridors.

Tristan shook his head at the woman's words and then yawned.

"I'm leaving too, I need to rest for tomorrow"

Even though Arlan wasn't sleepy after sleeping for so long, he understood that all the trouble that had happened put a high mental strain on everyone, so it was normal for them to be tired. Especially considering that it was three in the morning, and they certainly hadn't rested since everything had started.

Arlan was left alone in the kitchen with an empty tin of food in front of him and too many doubts in his head.

'Where did I get myself into?'

Arlan began to wonder if he should never have accepted Lia's deal and stayed in his house.

A mere weapon wasn't worth his life.

If Arlan had resigned himself to creating a weapon and distanced himself from everything that came with it, he would never have come to this island and would never have had to deal with mysterious, invisible monsters.

It was not that Arlan did not want to go to the island, he still wanted information about what happened 7 years ago and to investigate the strange arm himself. But that was before he realized that what he had planned no longer made sense.

But it was no longer worth regretting, now he was on the island with no way to escape. All that was left was to think about the present and look for a solution for his problem.

That night, Arlan did not sleep at all until everyone began to wake up one by one.

Arlan observed that all the people were clearly depressed and affected by many negative emotions.

Many of them had lost loved ones to the monsters, while others simply had a hard time accepting the current situation.

In any case, the atmosphere was depressing, and no one was helping to improve it. Even the soldiers had fearful and worried looks on their faces. They all had family outside this island that they longed to see again but seeing that it was unlikely or impossible to fulfill their wish, it was normal for them to feel morally bad.

When he saw last night that many of the people seemed to be injured, Arlan was not wrong. In fact, not only most, but everyone in the room had some sort of injury, some even couldn't get out of bed or just didn't feel like it.

Shortly after everyone woke up, a woman in a blue uniform with a long skirt, carrying a clipboard, walked through the door leading to the hallway that Arlan had passed through a few hours ago.

Seeing her, many of the previously depressed people brightened up a bit. The woman returned their greetings and slowly approached Arlan.

"Lady Laurel" greeted one of the soldiers stationed in the room to guard her.

Laurel thanked the soldier for his good work and soon arrived in front of Arlan.

"Good morning" Arlan greeted, sitting on the bed with his legs crossed.

"Good morning, take this"

Laurel didn't bother with small talk and got right to the point, handing him the clipboard.

Arlan took the clipboard and flipped through it before looking up at Laurel.

"What's this?"

"Your work"

"My work?"

Laurel nodded.

"You originally came here to work, didn't you? well, things may have changed, but you still have an obligation"

Arlan was silent for a few seconds before he answered.

"Why should I?"

It was true that Arlan had come strictly for work, but things had changed.

"You work directly for Lia, don't you? So get up and get to work"

Arlan was visibly surprised to hear his sister mentioned here.

"You know Lia?"

"We went to the same college" Laurel explained.

Although it was a surprise, Arlan didn't understand what his stepsister had to do with it. Laurel's next words, however, left him speechless.

"You're her new brother, or should I say stepbrother?"

Arlan straightened up and stood in front of Laurel. There were less than ten people who knew that he had been adopted by Leonard, and if she was one of them, it was because Lia or Leonard had told her directly.

It was a secret that even Leonard's wife and his other children didn't know, so Laurel was clearly someone important to know this information.

"Who are you?"

Laurel scoffed inwardly as she saw the change in Arlan's demeanor, Lia had told her a thing or two about him before the communication went down.

"Me? A lowly government official"
