Chereads / The Chef's Kiss / Chapter 12 - Her Lighthouse

Chapter 12 - Her Lighthouse

PAYDAY. HER FIRST full-time job paycheck since the twenty-one years she's lived.

One could say it was a step up the life ladder, a joy-filled moment, and she was just a step from attaining that. She just has to make it through the day without any mishaps.

Now, that seemed harder to obtain than invisibility.

And she was on to her routine, her daily tasks imprinted to the back of her mind. Every worker had a specific task to handle, but hers was, everything.

Ranging from running errands to sorting files to preparing ingredients for recipe trials to cleaning up after other workers.

In short, all she did was chop, wash, and run. All day long. A job befitting to the lowest class of assistants.

She had no complaints. All she had to do was work her way up, maybe, after years of hard work, she may finally be seen as a real assistant and not some tool at everyone's disposal, just maybe.

Her long fingers typed away on the keyboard. Her eyes sharply moving from the paper sheet beside the keyboard to the computer screen.

A figure loomed over her. Red-haired female leaning over her shoulder and tutting in displeasure at the sight.

"You're still too slow, a month, and your typing speed is still not up to par. You barely improved." The woman stands straight, rolling her eyes. "What a waste."

"I need the recipe printed out before the food trial begins," she stirs her cup of coffee, taking a small sip from it.

Luna nods her head in understanding, her fingers struggling to maintain their typing pace on the keyboard as the woman turned away.

"Also, Luna?"

She turns around, pointing her coffee spoon in her direction, causing a tense worker to pause her work, quickly turning around in reply.

"Yes, Ms. Lin?"

"Fix me a cup of coffee once you're done with that, the usual." She turns around to walk away.

"But we're out of cream ma'am," her heels halted, head turning around with an iritated look plastered over her face

"So? Order some more"

"The order has been placed miss, but delivery will not be until lunch break, the cafe says all delivery people are already out on deliveries"

"So?" Lin's voice took a harsher tone.

"What?" Luna let out confused.

"Then go get it yourself. What else are you getting paid today for? Lying on your lazy ass?"

"Yes ma'am!" Luna nods, shyly turning back to her work as she avoids the stares sent by her co-workers.

Completing and sending the recipe sheet to the printing machine, Luna picked up the printed papers, shortly scanning the copies for mistakes and stacking them up, she staples the sheets together, immediately heading for Ms. Lin's office.

She knocks twice, slowly opening the door and slipping in when she hears the permission.

"Ms. Lin, the printed recipe, I'll be heading to the cafe now to pick up the cream ma'am. She gently drops the packed files on her furnished desk, stepping back and awaiting instructions.

Ms. Lin flits through the printouts, eyes scanning for mistakes. Finding none, the red-haired sighs, sliding a credit card to the edge of the table, she speaks up when Luna picks it up respectfully. "No unnecessary expenses, or they'll be deducted from your paycheck. "

"Yes ma'am," she bows slightly, rushing out of the office and hastily picking up her peeling handbag from her chair's frame.

About to rush out, she was stopped by a call, turning around to face a coworker, newly hired as her.

The young lady's high-pitched voice caused Luna to wince, turning to face the neatly dressed lady.

"You're going to pick up the order from the cafe, right? C&C?"

"Yes," Luna replies gently.

"I need you to pick up something for me too" she annoyingly twirls her auburn strands around perfectly manicured fingers "today marks one month of me working here and I'm treating everyone to coffee, I already made the order but it's being delayed, bring them back for me will you?"

Luna was cut off before she could argue, "It's not like I'm forcing you to. It's your duty. Everyone sends you on errands, so why shouldn't I,"

Her bright pink lips parted to spill " Yes, we both got hired the same day and you're older than I am but that doesn't make you my superior, besides, I'm half elite and you're a lower class, there's nothing wrong with me sending you on errands"

Luna takes a deep breath, frown threatening to stretch over her face with the reminder of her class.

"Come on, smile!" Gao Wei Yan's pitched voice startled her."It's just a small order of coffee, nothing much, " she concludes, her pink heels clicking as she walks back to her cubicle.

Luna sighs, muttering to herself, "Payday Luna, walk this off, don't get rattled." she taps her chest encouragingly,

"Just a few hours left, you can make it through the day, Moon Luna." ☆☆
