Chapter 32 - Floors. Resources. Luck (3)

The regressor and I met again in my office on the lowest floor of Symphonia. In his clothes that heightened up his disguise to a max, he had appeared to converse with me at my call.

There wasn't much need for it, though. Since the people who could be keeping an eye on us were going to be too busy.

"Sit," I told the regressor, pulling away the curtains at my back just slightly. The sky was ashen and cloudy, even the fake sky inside the tower was gloomy, just like the regressor's visage.

The regressor took a seat and sighed. "Sir, why did you have to do this in such a roundabout manner? I almost had a heart attack—HHHAH!"

A slam resounded in the room as the Regressor fell face-first on the table. His gasps loud, breathing heavy, a pained, scared whimper escaped his lips as he clenched his chest.

My, my.

Regressor, Regressor, Regressor.

YOU DIED! YOU DIED! YOU FAILED!

A smile almost spilled from my lips as I placed my hand on the table and stood up. The regressor slowly raised his gaze toward me, his lips clenched his pupils trembling.

"S-s-stay… away…"

"You failed."

I stepped closer and the Regressor pulled away. Again, I stepped ahead.

The chair tipped over as the Regressor fell on his back.

I leaned down and placed a hand on his shoulder. Tears streamed down the Regressor's eyes.

"Don't worry, we can try again."

"I-I…"

"Shush…" I hissed, forcing him to shut up. "If we don't, a fate worse than death will await you."

I slowly got on my knees and pulled his chin up. My words nigh a whisper.

"You know, right? I have told you, right? This is the only we can move forward."

The Regressor tried to shake his head, but I held him firmly in place.

"You'll be bitten. Torn apart. They will eat you."

I got closer yet, my eyes just above his own.

"But not if you're with me. We just have to try now, so that you don't die. You didn't die, did you? You only failed and you came back."

Words. Words. Words.

"As long as I am around."

How splendid were these words?

"You won't die. We…"

How fickle was the truth?

"We can keep trying."

That I could change it whenever I so desired.

The Regressor shook yet more. A push, a final push.

My hand coiled around his neck, my fingers slowly captured his entire neck, and I started choking him.

"You know the pain of death."

I was hoping to remind him of what had happened before.

"I promised, I am going to help you avoid it. You only have to keep trying for me."

The Regressor coughed, unable to breathe. His feet kicked about but I didn't stop.

At that moment, a hiss rang.

"Meow!"

The cat had jumped from the ground and bit the back of the hand I was choking him with. It growled while its teeth dug into my hand.

Another smile almost surfaced.

"Do you see? We can't trust anyone. The moment you show weakness, they'll come to bite you, just like this."

Stupid cat.

I gently relaxed my arm, sense flowing away from it. The pain from the bite was spreading through, but I ignored it.

"But I will protect you, just like now."

Did it think it was going to help the Regressor? When I was already here?

The Regressor's gaze fell on the cat, an almost betrayed look in his eyes. But the feral black cat only sank its teeth deeper into my hand and tried to scratch at the air.

Still hooked on my arm, I raised the cat high—

"Not just protect, I will crush what comes your way."

"MEEEEOW!"

The cat screamed as its head smashed on the floor.

I picked it up by its head, and then slammed it on the ground again.

And then again.

Again. Again. Again.

Again.

A mush remained as its head spilled out on the ground.

The Regressor covered his mouth, the cat's face didn't even remain anymore. But I was sure.

To the end, it would have been trying to bite me.

Bite us.

"What comes," I looked in the Regressor's eyes. "Our way."

Slowly, very slowly, I brushed his hair back from his forehead. His crying and whimpering didn't stop.

"Regressor. You put your faith in me, didn't you?"

He slowly nodded.

"Say it."

"I-I… t-trust… you…"

I was the only one.

Who won't eat him.

"Let's try again."
