Chapter 29 - Ch28: Subject of interest.

Alaric stood outside on the balcony, leaning against the railing as he gazed out over the meticulously maintained gardens below. The cool evening air was a welcome relief from the stifling atmosphere of the banquet hall, where the constant buzz of politics and ambition had begun to wear on him. With Duke Edmond's presence looming over the event, Alaric couldn't afford to insult his way through conversations as he usually did.

He sighed deeply, feeling the weight of expectation pressing down on him. Then, without turning around, he spoke into the darkness. "You can come out now, Cedric. I know you're there."

A figure emerged from the shadows, stepping into the dim light of the balcony. Cedric Hove, the Duke's son, grinned at Alaric. "You're perceptive. But then again, I suppose you have to be in a place like this."

Alaric chuckled, shaking his head. "If I cared about formalities, I wouldn't be talking to you out here, away from all the scheming nobles. Titles mean little when you're surrounded by people constantly plotting against each other."

Cedric leaned against the railing next to Alaric, looking thoughtful. "You know, most people address me as 'young master' or 'Lord Cedric'. It's refreshing to hear someone just call me by my name."

"I find that titles are only as important as the people who wield them," Alaric replied. "And in a party like this, they're often used more as weapons than as signs of respect."

Cedric laughed, a genuine, hearty sound that stood in stark contrast to the hollow politeness of the banquet. "You have a way with words, Alaric. No wonder your reputation precedes you."

Alaric shrugged. "Reputation is just another mask. What matters is what lies beneath."

Cedric nodded, his expression becoming serious. "You know, I've heard a lot about you and your... unconventional methods. People say you're different from your family, that you don't fit into their mold."

"People say a lot of things," Alaric said, his tone measured. "But yes, I prefer to forge my own path rather than follow the one laid out for me."

"I admire that," Cedric admitted. "It's not easy to stand apart, especially in a place like this."

Alaric glanced at Cedric, studying him for a moment. "And what about you? Do you find it easy to stand apart, or are you just another noble trying to climb the social ladder?"

Cedric's smile faded slightly. "I guess we're all trying to climb in our own way. But I've never been one to do things just because they're expected of me."

"Good," Alaric said. "Because following expectations blindly is the quickest way to lose yourself."

The two young men stood in companionable silence for a while, each lost in their own thoughts. The sounds of the banquet hall seemed distant and insignificant compared to the quiet, honest conversation they shared on the balcony.

"Well," Cedric finally said, breaking the silence, "I should probably get back inside before someone notices I'm missing."

Alaric nodded. "Same here. But it was good to talk, Cedric. Sometimes it's nice to have a conversation that isn't laced with ulterior motives."

Cedric smiled. "Agreed. Take care, Alaric."

"You too," Alaric replied, watching as Cedric disappeared back into the shadows.

As he stood alone on the balcony, Alaric felt a sense of clarity. Despite the relentless scheming and politics that surrounded him, he knew there were still moments of genuine connection to be found. And perhaps, in Cedric, he had found an unexpected ally.

With a final deep breath, Alaric turned and walked back into the banquet hall, ready to face the night once more

Duke Edmond sat in his guest room, the dim light from the fireplace casting long shadows on the walls. The door creaked open, and Cedric entered, closing it softly behind him.

"If it wasn't for your request," Duke Edmond began, looking up at his son, "I wouldn't have asked Count Vargas to introduce his sons."

Cedric took a seat across from his father, his brow furrowed. "Was I right?"

The Duke nodded. "You were correct. Vargas's youngest son, Alaric, has a pitiful amount of Mana talent."

Cedric leaned back in his chair, his mind racing. "Something was off when I saw him during the hunt. He was using a strange blue device to shoot a deer. The power he displayed was too much for someone with his level of magic."

Duke Edmond raised an eyebrow. "A strange blue device, you say?"

"Yes," Cedric confirmed, "and it was precise. He didn't hesitate, and the shot was perfect. It didn't add up."

The Duke leaned forward, his interest piqued. "What do you make of it?"

Cedric's eyes narrowed in thought. "It's as if he's found a way to bypass his lack of Mana talent. That device he used... it seemed to channel power in a way I've never seen before."

Duke Edmond sat back, considering his son's words. "If Alaric Vargas has discovered a means to harness power without relying on traditional Mana, that could be significant."

"Indeed," Cedric agreed. "It means he's not just a weak link in the Vargas family. He might be more dangerous and more valuable than we initially thought."

Duke Edmond nodded slowly. "We must tread carefully. Alaric's potential could be a double-edged sword. He could be an asset if we understand his methods, but he could also be a threat if left unchecked."

Cedric's resolve hardened. "I'll keep a closer watch on him. We need to learn more about that device and his true capabilities."

"Good," the Duke said, his voice firm. "Gather information, but do not draw attention to your curiosity. We cannot afford to alert Alaric or the Vargas family to our interest."

Cedric stood, a determined look on his face. "I won't disappoint you, Father. I'll uncover the truth about Alaric."

Duke Edmond gave a brief nod. "I trust you will. Goodnight, Cedric."

"Goodnight, Father," Cedric replied, leaving the room.

As Cedric walked out of the room he stopped as if remembering something"There's one problem, though."

Duke Edmond looked up from his desk, his curiosity piqued. "And what is that?"

"Alaric doesn't seem interested in the typical pursuits of power or recognition," Cedric explained. "He's different from others his age. It's almost as if he's planning something in the long term."

Duke Edmond leaned back in his chair, his fingers steepled. "Planning something, you say? What makes you think that?"

Cedric crossed his arms, his expression thoughtful. "I've been watching him. His actions are calculated, and he doesn't seek approval or validation from his family. Instead, he keeps to himself, always working on something in secret."

The Duke's eyes narrowed. "That could make him more dangerous than we thought. A man without the need for recognition is often driven by deeper motives."

Cedric nodded. "Exactly. If he is indeed planning something significant, it means he's operating on a different level. He's not just a pawn in the usual noble games."

Duke Edmond considered this, his mind racing. "We need to understand his endgame. Whatever he's planning, it could have far-reaching consequences."

Cedric's resolve hardened. "I'll keep a closer watch on him. We need to gather more information about his projects and his intentions."

"Do so discreetly," the Duke warned. "We cannot afford to alert him or his family to our suspicions. If Alaric is indeed as cunning as you believe, any sign of our interest could drive him further into secrecy."

"Understood," Cedric replied. "I'll proceed with caution."

As Cedric left the room, his mind buzzed with the complexity of the task ahead. Alaric Vargas was a puzzle, one that Cedric was determined to solve. His father's words echoed in his mind, reinforcing the need for discretion. Alaric's plans, whatever they might be, could change the balance of power within their kingdom,as he has something that defies convention.

And Cedric intended to be ahead of the game, no matter what it took.

Meanwhile, Duke Edmond returned to his thoughts, the thoughts of Alaric's unusual device and behavior lingering. He knew that understanding Alaric's true motives was crucial. If Cedric's observations were accurate, Alaric Vargas could be a force to reckon with. And in the delicate dance of power and influence, knowledge was the most potent weapon of all.
