Chapter 18 - Chapter (16) Taking Prisoners? (4)

I slowly approach what I can only assume to be the only two survivors. Ironic. They also seem to be lovers. Must be one hell of a way to go, from their perspective, it must seem as though they are going through a modern-day Pompeii.

But they will get no sympathy from me. No, they made their choices and this is where it led them. Not to mention the fact that they are one of the more extremist groups, like blowing up hospitals and orphanages to prove a point type of extremist. Safe to say I agree with Emile when it comes to killing these assholes with extreme prejudice.

'I wonder what they are thinking as they watch me come closer. Could it be something like 'this is the end' or 'please have mercy'? Maybe even something like 'Please get me out of this nightmare'. Whatever it is, it must be pretty depressing if those looks on their face are any indicator of their true thoughts.' I think to myself looking at the pale and tearful couple clinging to themselves so tightly…that they may just fuse themselves together.

'I bet in their eyes I act like a monster…Though now that I am bathed in blood up to a horse's bridle. I probably look the part as well.'

I finally reach the pair of people and stop to stand. I slowly reach down, unholstering my pistol. Though I am covered in blood my gloves aren't slick and I can hold my gun with a wonderful grip without fear of dropping it.

I pull back the slide checking to see if there is a chambered round, and as I suspected I am empty. I make a bit of a show by pressing the magazine release button making sure they both watch as I do.

*clang*

The magazine hits the wet but hard floor clattering as gravity brings its small fall to a rest. After a second I begin to pat my pouches as if I am searching for another magazine of ammunition for the sidearm. Though I know I have exactly one single 12-round magazine of ammo remaining in my left chest pouch, but they don't know that. So to play up the suspense I act as if I am unsure if I am out of ammo, but as I search I stare at them unmoving except for the ammo.

Eventually, I patted every pouch until…' found it. As I slowly pull the magazine from its home the look of horror I see on their faces makes me think that I am the antagonist of some slasher flick from back in the day.

Pushing the magazine into the frame of the gun until it locks itself in place. I then pull back on the slide chambering the 1st round. It is at this point that the male, who I am guessing is Nemesio Breit according to the mission brief a.k.a this graveyard's leader, looks down for a few seconds as I slowly raise my shooting hand. He then looks up and seems as if he has decided upon something great and it was then that I knew my little act paid off.

With a mischievous smile underneath my helmet 'Hook line and sinker…Gotcha' was the thought that reflected my expression.

"P-please let my wife live. I don't care if you kill me but" Nemesio paused for a second "S-she is pregnant and I forced her to do everything against her will. S-So please even if you have to imprison her for some reason don't kill her." he said all of this with a shaky voice. I must say he is the definition of scared shitless.

The woman looked an odd combination of touched and mortified but before she said anything I interrupted her "Why would I do that? You must have already seen that I am to take no prisoners. Even if her circumstances may be special, that does not change the fact that I have a mission to do." I say with a level calm voice.

The man immediately went wide-eyed and I swear he was so white that paper would be as dark as midnight when compared to him "Y-you monster. I-I wish that a-all of the one's like you would just go die on your suicid-" The man spat out stuttering and with venom cursing the day I was born before he choked on his words realizing what he had just said.

I tilted my head to the side when I heard what he said.

'Well…Now isn't that interesting'

Though killing a pregnant woman is something that I would abhor to do…even if the said bitch in question has probably got a mountain of innocent corpses in her shadow. The kid she carries is completely innocent of such crimes. However, with what he just said he may have bought himself and his wife some time.

…Inversely he may have just given me another job….damn it

"Come in Command," I say muting the helmet mic for the outside contacting whatever handler they had for me on this mission. I also lowered my pistol, confusing the couple in front of me.

"We read you loud and clear Agent Texas send traffic." the young female voice on the line said in a clear sound.

When I heard the term 'Agent Texas' I couldn't help but get an annoyed look on my face and grip my pistol a bit tighter. I was given the call sign because of the fact I have a slight southern drawl. Something that followed me from my past life and it also didn't help in this life. I grew up on a farm. So Naomi or Kurt one of the two most likely vouched for that to be my call sign. (Author's note: Just FYI the united states actually exists in Halo and still does)

"Huuuuuh…It w

ould seem that the leader of this installation knows something that he shouldn't, and is willing to cooperate in exchange for the life of his wife and her unborn child. Now, what do you want me to do with them? Kill the wife and take the husband, or just shoot both of them and continue with the original orders?" I sigh before giving the rundown of the situation. Though Nemesio did not say that he would cooperate I figured that I would just go ahead and skip over any negotiation and intimidation that I would have to do. I mean come on me and him both know that he would take this deal seeing as it gives him exactly what he wants.

Though now that I think about it. That kid could grow up to try and kill me in some sick plot for revenge. Because his or her daddy will either rot in prison for the rest of his life or get put on the firing line. While their mommy will at the very least be monitored for the rest of her life.

But that's whatever no matter what they do it is dependent on one thing. That I actually survive this war, and if all I have to worry about in the future is a homicidal maniac looking to throw their life away attempting to kill me instead of saving the universe from a ancient evil and racist aliens. Then I think I would happily make such a trade.

'Now that I think about it, what will I do with my life if I survive this war?' the thought invaded my head and reminded me of my mindset in my past life 'In my past life I didn't know either. Hell, I couldn't see anything past the one second I was living. I never knew if tomorrow would come and a part of me hoped it never would. A small portion of myself hoped that it would all just end-'

"Higher ups say to just bag and tag them Texas. I have already sent the recovery team for you and the equipment. I assume you have already completed the other objectives." said the female voice in a questioning tone snapping me out of my depressing thoughts.

"Affirmative command. Though I would also send a cleaning team along with the recovery team. The mission got a little…messy." I say in response.

"...How messy?" The young voice asks

"Well…I am currently painted a new color but I am not using the armor's abilities. The floor is also flooded. It seems global warming not only comes at different seasons this year but also with new colors." I answer with a slightly humorous approach.

"Huuuh Great thanks for the heads up. I will get them underway. It should take at max 20-30 minutes." she said in a defeated tone before ending communications.

I then turn back to the pair after my small conversation with my handler. I stood there, gun still in hand, looking at them for a couple of moments. 'The anticipation must be killing them' I thought before I took one more moment and then holstered my pistol.

"You seem to know who was the real person backing your little Insurrection. In exchange for your wife and child's life, you will give all the information and knowledge you have on that person and their associates. This is no negotiation and the only deal you will be offered. So I suggest you start thinking long and hard about everything you can say. Otherwise, the deal is off the table." I say while trying to find a comfortable pile of bodies to sit on.

They both nodded quickly in response to my words and began to sob tears of relief. I couldn't help but get annoyed and wonder if this was what Bonnie and Clyde were like in the 20th century. Shaking my head I leaned back upon my throne of dead flesh and blood deciding to close my eyes and think about what I would say in my mission report.

And with a crying couple, over 200 dead rebels, and an annoyed Spartan my first mission came to an end.

Mission…Success
