Chapter 1 - The target

Milo

The alley way is dark, and the only light comes from the moon, which is bright enough to illuminate the faces of those walking down the alley. A man is walking down the alley way with his hands in his pockets. He has a dark beard and is wearing a black coat. He is not my target, but he will lead me to my next kill.

The work I do takes precise and calculated planning. It has been two weeks. Two weeks of surveillance, two weeks of watching and waiting. I know everything that is going to happen from this moment on.

Giovanni--the man I am following is going to meet up with her at the hotel. As they usually do every Thursdays. Giovanni and Marley Ross rendezvous at the same hotel, at the same time every week, each harbor8ing their own secrets and motives. Little do they know however that their well-rehearsed schedule has become the perfect window of opportunity for me. They have been under my watchful eye for two weeks and today is the day that I will strike.

A hundred thousand dollars to kill the wife of a senator is a good day's work. The stakes are high but the reward is worth it, especially if it means maintaining my reputation as the best in the business. My determination to succeed only fuels my meticulous preparation and the hours spent in the shadows, watching their every move. With every target, I remind myself that emotions are a luxury I cannot afford; I must remain focused and unyielding in my pursuit.

Marley Ross turns around the corner and I wait a couple of seconds before I follow him. I know where he is going, so there is no rush. I maintain a safe distance, staying within the shadows as I follow him closely yet discreetly. My heart races with anticipation, but my resolve remains steadfast. It is crucial that I stay focused, keeping a clear head in order to ensure the flawless execution of the task at hand. Tonight, Marley Ross, your fate is sealed, and every step you take brings you closer to your final moments.

As Giovanni approaches the hotel, I can sense the tension in the air – a mixture of excitement and fear, much like the feeling before the curtain rises on a grand performance. The once mundane routine shared between Marley and Giovanni has now become a carefully choreographed dance, a dance in which I hold the power to cut the strings. Secretly, I wonder if there's even a sliver of suspicion in their minds that tonight will be catastrophically different. Regardless of their awareness, I remain resolute in my pursuit, moving ever closer to fulfilling my contract and solidifying my reputation as the unrivaled master in this deadly game.

The moon casts ominous shadows as I continue to trail him.

It is amazing to know that a man like Marley Ross, a man who has done so much wrong would be unaware of the target on his back.

I follow him into the building, the reception as he collects the key from the desk clerk. It is almost like I am invisible to everyone and everything, no one sees me. I have years of mastering the art of invisibility. I follow him into the elevator, and I am ready.

I watch Giovanni unlock the door to the hotel room, completely unaware of the fate that awaits behind the closed door. The moment has finally arrived – it's time for me to prepare for my lethal act. Meticulously, I slip on my black gloves and ready my weapon of choice; the silencer-equipped pistol feels cold and heavy in my hands, yet it brings me an odd sense of comfort. As the door clicks shut behind the unsuspecting pair, I take a deep breath and count down the seconds, steeling myself for the task that will once again reaffirm my status as the best in this dark trade. In this fleeting moment before the kill, I catch the glimmers of vulnerability in the unsuspecting and I can't help but ponder the fragility of life--how quickly it can be snuffed out by an unseen force, leaving nothing but a void in its wake.

As the clock ticks closer to the pivotal moment, I can't help but acknowledge the irony of this situation – Marley Ross, a man who has built his fortune on the misery of others, now sealed within the very walls he believed would keep him safe. My heart rate begins to accelerate, my senses heightened, as I quietly approach the door, ready to deliver the coup de grâce. With each passing second, the weight of my responsibilities and my dedication to my craft solidify my resolve. And as I stand on the precipice between life and death, I take one last breath before slipping silently into the room, prepared to exact the ultimate price on a man long overdue for his reckoning.

There is one rule I have, never be seen. Even by my prey. I am not into confrontation. I don't want questions asked because I don't have the answers. Giovanni is the target, but Marley is collateral damage. Her husband wants her dead. That is all I know; all I need to know to carry out my job.

As I enter the dimly lit room, the scent of impending doom lingers in the air. Shadows flicker against the walls, seemingly dancing in anticipation of the grim spectacle to come. Silently, I move towards my unsuspecting targets, my footsteps perfectly synchronized with their breathing, a waltz of death drawing to its finale. With the precision of an artist and the finality of a judge, I execute my plan, ensuring that Marley Ross and Giovanni will forever become echoes of the past in this twisted world I navigate.

As the deafening silence returns to the room, I take a moment to survey the outcome of my meticulously executed deed. The lifeless forms of Marley Ross and Giovanni serve as a testament to my unwavering commitment to my craft. Quietly, I retrace my steps, leaving no trace of my presence behind. And, as the last vestiges of the night dissipate into the encroaching dawn, I vanish from the scene, my mission complete – another successful foray into the dark and ethereal world I inhabit.

As I retreat into the shadows, I am both haunted and invigorated by the duality of my existence. In the light of day, I am but a mere phantom, walking among the innocent, my true purpose hidden from their sight. Yet, in the dark recesses of the night, I am a formidable force, shaping the fates of those who are chosen to cross my path. Forever straddling the line between life and death, I move forward, bound to this darkness, a silent reaper in a world teetering on the edge of chaos.

I send an encrypted message to the cleaner; I call him the cleaner even though he is more of an employee. We have a no names, no information about each other.

I know he is, because I know who everyone is, and I have done my checks on him.

He will never know who I am.

No one will ever know who I am.

That is the way it has to be.
