Chapter 1 - Preface

This is a story not of war nor conquest nor great deeds but a story of friendship and brotherhood.

We begin in a small town of no more than 100 people. A colony near the port of Gildder, called Glimmer-Scale. With the birth of a new life in an average family,

A woman with a spattering of shiny yellow scales, lays exhausted while holding a small infant with a pair of small bat-like wings on his back and a swath of shiny yellow scales that sparkle in the fire light.

Next to her is a man of large stature with curved horns, and sharp Claws is seated in a chair holding her.

"He's here love, you did well." The man says gently to the exhausted woman as he kisses the top of her head.

"I'll call Elley." The man rose from his seat and walked to the door.

A moment later, the man returned with a small girl with yellow scales and curved back horns.

"He's so small," the girl says bluntly.

"Mama, why is he so small? Will he get bigger?" She stopped herself from asking more because it was clear to see how tired her mother was, but she couldn't help but ask at least what she did.

"He'll get bigger in time, but I hope not too soon." The woman said lightly, trying not to disturb the sleeping baby.

The woman looked Elley in the eyes and said very seriously, "Elley, you're a big sister now. When we're not with you, it's up to you to take care of him, alright."

Elley shook her head vigorously. She was excited. She had always wanted a little brother or sister to play with and look after and teach all kinds of things.

"Good now, come closer and say hello to your brother," the woman had a smile on her face as the little girl slowly approached her.

The baby was still sleeping, swaddled in a heavy blanket. His tiny horns displayed prominently.

Elley held her finger out to the baby, and the baby grabbed it.

Elley was ecstatic and giddy, but also, at this moment, she felt how fragile he was. She made a vow to herself to always look out for him.

"Mama, what's his name?"

"We named him after our ancestor, Umber."
