I guess the memories that are hitting me, crash into Warren too, as he speaks up after a beat of silence. /"We still are./"
/"No, we aren't./" My defense mechanism quickly shoots him down.
The speaker pours sounds of rustling and I wonder if he is working.
/"Evelyn, best friends don't break up. They drift away./"
The words incinerate my hatred for him and all that I've shared with him those ten years ago comes flooding toward me.
It's crazy how I see the wave from miles away, yet I don't turn the other way. I stand and let the water drown me with its weight. Sinking me so deep that I have to learn how to breathe underwater.
/"So you still think of me as your best friend?/" I ask as I switch off the lights in the living room and let Seattle lights up my room.
/"Always. You're my best friend before anything else./"
