Dangit. Devin knew Mattie did that on purpose. He had a chance to explain things correctly, and now Mattie just screwed it up for him.
"Suckers are like calling cards here," Billy answered. "Green and blue means family or marriage. Red is single. Purple is commited. Orange is seeing somebody. Pink is single but wanting to see somebody. You can get whatever taste you want, they are just artificially colored. You can get lime in green, pink, or red for instance. You know?"
"You hang out with them through the day." Mattie had grabbed herself a purple one. "At the end, you eat them and buy another one tomorrow."
"Wouldn't little bands be easier?" Sweetie asked.
"Why would we do that? Different band colors? That's dumb," Mattie answered back. "This is tradition. We've always done it. Stupid or not."
