POV: Devin
I watched the werewolf killers ask around for intel. Grayson and William, probably the biggest jerks in all of humanity. I dunked my small donut into my coffee, waiting. We already had a mess up, the women wolves we had used to set everything up were actually on their way again to retry lunch.
Grayson and William were absolutely ready to kill those two women, not even aware the one responsible for them was actually only two tables behind them. It wouldn't be long before they knew where the women would be, and-
"-Could you look less suspicious?"
Ugh. My sister She would never go to the Wolf Islands, but I couldn't keep her away from the human's domain. "Mattie, please stay quiet."
"They can't hear anything. It's too loud in here," Mattie insisted. "Can you hand me the salt?"
I handed her the salt. I was probably staring too much. This was just so important, I didn't want to mess it up.
"Mattie," Mads spoke up from beside me. "We are here for something important. I don't care how loud it is, you need to keep your comments to yourself. Devin wasn't doing anything suspicious."
"No, I was calling out you." She reached over and grabbed the salt to salt the tomatoes on her sandwich.
"The sandwiches didn't need salted," Mads said to her.
Oh boy, Mads was not used to my sister yet at all. I ignored the oncoming argument they would probably have and looked back toward Grayson and William. We had to be delicate with how we approached the matter. We would also have to explain why two women who happened to be werewolves could smell-
"Why would you go and grab the salt to salt your cucumbers, just to put them on your sandwich?" Mads was getting fed up with Mattie. "Remind me again why we brought your sister?"
"She doesn't stand out," I reminded him. Even though it seemed like she did stand out to them, Mattie was a more ambitious woman with little experience outside their own private area. The word wolf killer didn't mean anything to her since she wasn't in her wolf form. Others tended to glance over too much, or look nervous.
Mattie was just hanging out, salting her tomatoes on her sandwich even more. I know she's not going to actually eat that sandwich, she's just annoying Mads with it.
"That is way too much." Mads looked disgusted, so she succeeded in her role.
I watched as the women wolves, who had been pawns in the game, at least didn't come there. Grayson was watching out the window and saw Lily Hammer walk past. I stayed still along with my sister and Mads as Grayson and William walked out of the establishment, hellbent on getting to them.
I picked up my coffee one more time, taking a light sip. "Now?"
"Now," Mads agreed.
All three of us got up and headed after the humans. There was an unknown in the situation, the last guy was probably a coworker. I tangled with him first that way Mads would play nicer. Mads was taking Grayson and William on.
For humans, they fought well. He also had to dodge some knives. Still, they were more famous from rumors than anything they actually ever did. None of us had even transformed.
Grayson and William didn't bother Mattie at all. She made no motion to fight, choosing to just watch the fight. To those two, they would consider that a definite non-wolf just a shocked viewer.
That's because they'd only had experiences with a certain kind of wolf.
That kind of wolf, it wasn't us. Grayson and William fought hard, but now that I was not distracted from making sure the human and the innocent women werewolves were okay, they had no chance against the two of us.
"Billy!" Grayson was tackling just both me and Mads now, Billy was unconscious. Mattie was trying to tell the women wolves what was happening. Their expressions back towards me definitely indicated they weren't happy.
Well, at least they didn't get involved in the process. Which I mean, was us fighting. There was no way we could leave them as loose strings to our actions.
After all, we weren't ordinary werewolves.
We were pirates.
And we had four new people now boarding.
---
Grayson glared out at the sea.
The sea.
How did this happen? He had bested just about every werewolf they tangled with. Werewolves were strong, but they were stupid. Often clumsy, they were easy to outsmart in a fight. These kidnappers had to be werewolves, but they had never changed forms at all. They bested him and Billy, without even changing forms! A beatdown, human to human form.
He hated to say it, but he felt humbled.
"Glad to see you are awake." One of them came over and greeted him. "I am Devin Oliver Olivacea."
Oh, this made him even madder. This thing, this wolf that took him down was being polite? "Where are we?"
"Oh. Metaphorically or physically?" he asked him strangely. "Yes, I know about the DNA experiment on you. Only, it wasn't by the women you had seen. It had happened before that. Since those women were hiding as werewolves for so long only among humans, you both were drawn to them."
What?
"Oh, don't worry." That wolf smiled. "I'm sure they don't want to be your mates either. They are still coming to terms with being yanked from their lives too. We are trying to make this as pleasant as possible for everyone."
Not the women? "What did you do to us?" Him and Billy, what did they do to them?
"It was so subtle, you are only now seeing traces of it. That's only because Lily and Jill triggered you off. You see, most werewolves you have tangled with in the past were the outlaws that were trying to illegally enter your city," that wolf explained. "Those two are werewolves, but they are a lot closer to humans. Their next generation probably won't shift at all."
"We don't care about that!" Billy woke up in a mood too. "Stop with your oh-so-polite bull, and tell us what you plan on doing with us?!"
"Using you," the young woman from before said as she came toward Billy. "Hi, I'm Mattie. I'm a total werewolf, I can't believe you guys missed that." She waved nicely. "Nice to meet you, Werewolf Killers. That doesn't sound as pleasant. Maybe WK for short?"
"We're actually just called cops?" Billy pointed out sarcastically. "We protect our city."
"Your version of protection is different than ours," Mattie said to him. She went over toward Grayson. "Ooh, you are a big one. I wonder how my brother took you down?"
Ooh, she just had to say that. Grayson sneered at her. "I wouldn't poke fun for long."
"Of course not, and your secret is safe with me," Mattie said to him. "After all, if a bunch of wolves on Wolf Island know about your true identities? We are going to have a bloodbath problem that's going to take more than one mop."
