Chapter 60 - Despair

The woman walked through the dimly lit streets of Aster City. No, it would be more accurate to say that she was strolling along, clearly happy after a certain event.

Pretending not to notice the shadows following her, the woman continued to stroll leisurely.

"Sir, we have found the perpetrator. How should we proceed?" One of the shadows whispered into his mic.

"Follow her for now," an order was recieved from the other side and the shadows continued to trail the woman.

They followed her around the city until they realised that they were walking in a circle.

"Sir I think she knows." One of the shadows reported.

"Apprehend her immediately," the voice from the radio answered immediately.

The shadows sprung forth and surrounded the woman. Rising out of the shadows, was a squadron of officers. Each was equipped with unique equipment and uniforms suited to their gifts, and all of them were armed for battle.

"Surrender now, or we will have to use force." One of the officers said as all of them got ready.

Universal energy gathered around each person, and anyone who could see it would see multiple spikes of universal energy sticking out of the ground from where the officers were. The spikes reached the sky and their concentration was nothing to scoff at.

One of the officers crushed a coin in her hand and the universal energy surrounding the street warped and enclosed the people along with the road that they were standing on. A transparent barrier was formed, protecting the outside houses from the fight that was about to occur.

"Hmmm, I was wondering when you would show up," the woman chirped happily ignoring the barrier that had formed.

"I was getting bored thinking that you wouldn't come out. I'm in a good mood now, maybe I won't play too much," The woman continued acting completely out of place to the current situation.

"Officer get ready." One of the officers ordered. There was clearly no talking with the woman in front of them.

"But I had to stop myself before so I-" The woman continued to talk to herself without a care in the world. The officers rushed at the woman, activating their gifts and launching different attacks.

Earthen shackles were raised from the ground sealing her legs. Multiple controlled blasts of fire, lightning, light and other ranged attacks were fired at the same time. A couple of the officers sprung into action readying their weapons to catch the woman right after all the ranged attacks had connected.

"I'll have fun," the woman ended while facing the barrage of attacks. Her face warped with a bloodthirsty grin, fire literally burning in her eyes.

The woman gathered universal energy and literally shot it out of her eyes while activating her gift. Two red beams burst forth burning everything in its path, hitting the barrier behind the officers the beams of fire fizzed out and dispersed.

The officers, prepared for resistance, dodged expertly and moved in a formation.

The ones with the weapons rushed in to give the ranged ones time to launch another attack.

Slashing forwards, a male officer swung his sword to cut the woman's neck. Enhancing it with his gift, the sword turned a blue color and hummed with power.

*CLASH* A powerful sound rang out as the blade connected. Before the man could react a beam of red light was fired towards him.

Just before it hit, he felt a sudden pull as he was pulled down and out of the way of the beam. Taking his place was another officer who uppercut the woman's chin with gauntlets to redirect the beams toward the sky where it met the same fate as its predecessor.

"FOCUS!" An officer shouted out from the back.

The ranged officers had finished preparing and launched another attack, this time without holding back. The earthen restraints were covered with some unknown mineral. An arrow of fire flashed by aimed straight at the woman's chest. The skies around the street turned battlefield rumbled and a grand lightning bolt descended from the sky. Light warped and shot toward the woman's eyes.

The melee officers retreated back to avoid the clash.

Pushing back, the officer with the sword felt resistance and found that the woman was holding onto his uniform. Along with him was the one who had redirected the beams from him.

Fear sprung forth as both officers struggled fiercely to free themselves.

Unsuccessful, all their attacks on the woman were burnt away. The temperature surrounding them skyrocketed, not due to the incoming attacks, but due to the woman who was finally revealing her true power.

Using all their willpower, the officers gathered as much universal energy and surrounded themselves to try to survive.

The last thing they heard before their world turned white was a peal of unnerving laughter.

------

A cloud of dust and debris could be seen obscuring the battlefield.

Surrounding the area was the barrier, now opaque, that protected the houses situated next to the streets. The area inside the street was entirely demolished. The bare ground was all that was left. Malicious red flames flickered on the ground making sizzling sounds and burning the very ground that they were on.

A gust of wind cleared the dust cloud revealing the woman standing in the center unharmed. The same red fire flickered at the end of her hair and inside her eyes. A maniacal smile hung on her lips as she gazed at the destruction. A shiver of pleasure shot through her as she surveyed her handiwork.

The two officers that she had caught, were charred to their bones and were lying at her feet as black skeletons.

The rest of the officers grouped up together, their once robust group now a ragtag group of survivors. The ones who had survived were the ones who put up strong enough defenses in time for the explosion.

"What happened? Done already? That can't be," the woman called out almost slurring her words, the fire surrounding her flickered wildly and grew in size.

One of the remaining officers tried to contact their command center but to no response.

"It's dead.." the officer muttered.

Dread started to set in as the group faced the woman whose flames seemed to come from Hell itself.

"Can you feel the connection to our chief?" One of the officers asked in a desperate tone.

"Oh don't bother~" The woman laughed after hearing their little conversation.

"I burnt that little connection during the explosion," the woman continued. "I hope that chief of yours felt that." The woman smiled with a dreamy look on her face.

"But I guess I'll see that later. Right now I have you guys," The woman concluded while talking to herself.

The flames surrounding her grew in size and she stomped down and rushed towards the group.

One officer grit his teeth and shouted, "SCATTER, MAKE TIME-"

And then the woman was on top of them. Giving them no time to react, she went right for the one barking orders and grabbed his face. Her hand started to turn red as she started to burn the skin on his face.

His muffled screams rang out as the others tried to help, defying his previous orders.

Suddenly lightning crashed down aimed right at the woman.

The officer who had fired it off fell to his ground exhausted.

An unbelievable sight entered his eyes as his lightning was literally burnt away after touching the woman's fire-coated hair.

The thunder finally caught up and rumbled as the woman turned to face the trembling officer.

Dropping the other officer whose face was half melted, the woman turned and ran straight into a beam of light followed by two high-speed arrows. Again both attacks were met with the same fate of the lightning.

Kicking the trembling officer with a boom, the woman pivoted to dodge a blade made up of some mineral.

Grabbing it with her hand, the pulled the officer swinging it towards her. Her eyes glowed red and two beams of concentrated fire burst forth and killed the man without a further second.

"Next~" the woman shouted with happiness.

In the next few minutes most of the officers were lying dead, almost all burnt to a crisp or having half their body burnt away from the potent flames.

The only one who was alive, or who was left alive, was the officer with the burnt face.

"Now how should I kill you?" the woman thought out loud, not planning on sparing him at any cost.

Stepping towards him, the temperature in her surroundings suddenly dropped drastically.

Stopping, another crazy smile sprouted on her lips.

"GAV!" She shouted with delight and spun around.

There stood Gavin Ruth with his body covered with a visible sheen of white ice.

"..Bell.." Gavin's cold voice sounded out. Imbued with some power, the surroundings cooled even further. The water in the air started to crystallize as white spots of pure ice started to form around Gavin. The flames on the ground were extinguished while the ones surrounding Bell flickered and dimmed.

"Cold as always, I like it," Bell grinned, the fire in her eyes grew in intensity.

The two had a silent stare-off before both made their move.

Gavin flicked his hand and encased the dying officer in ice just before Bell tried to crush his head with her foot.

Having struck ice, Bell clicked her tongue and jumped to the side to dodge the incoming ice spears aimed at her back.

Channeling her universal energy, the fire around her reinvigorated, and the temperature rose in her surroundings. At the midway point, the hot air and cold air with ice crystals collided and hissed as steam started to form between them.

Bell blasted out two beams of fire from her eyes and closed in on Gavin.

Raising a wall of ice, the fire beams that had previously obliterated everything were stopped in their tracks. Kicking forwards, Gavin pushed the ice wall towards Bell catching her off guard.

Igniting her surroundings, Bell coated herself in fire and shot directly through the block of ice and right toward Gavin. A loud hissing sound accompanied Bell's charge as the ice was directly vaporized when she touched it.

Exhaling visibly, Gavin stamped down and two pure white spikes of ice shot from the ground trying to impale Bell.

Striking her, the only thing the spikes did were knock Bell back, extinguishing her flame coating.

Catching her balance, Bell rubbed her stomach where the spikes had struck.

"Let's play some more shall we?" Bell asked with a twisted smile plastered on her face, not so much a question, but rather a statement. A torrential amount of universal energy gathered around her waiting for her command.

Silently Gavin did the same and an uneasy silence enveloped the battlefield.

Bell felt shivers crawling down her spine as she decided to kick-start the battle once more.

Just then a cold voice sounded out in her head and poured cold water over her burning spirit.

"No 3, return now. You have caused enough trouble," No 2's indifferent voice resounded in her head.

"WHAT?! BUT IT'S JUST GETTING FUN!" Bell or No 3 shouted in anger at No 2.

"This is No 1's command. Besides, you've already attracted the attention of the supreme. Get back before you die." No 2 ordered once more and cut off the connection between them.

"HEY WAIT. YOU CAN'T JUST ORDER ME AROUND!" Bell screamed out loud surprising Gavin. Her face twisted with a deep rage as her universal energy shook violently, the air around her expanding rapidly causing a low boom.

Gavin gathered more power preparing himself for what was about to come.

But that never happened. Exhaling angrily, Bell glared at Gavin and spat, "Looks like I have to go. Let's continue this at some other time." Then flames cloaked her once more and Bell disappeared from her spot with another boom as the air in her place rapidly cooled due to Gavin.

Gavin just silently watched her go, letting her leave. After all his orders were only to engage and save as many officers as he could. He was not to chase after Bell if she chose to flee.

Exhaling once more, Gavin went over to the only surviving officer and checked his vitals.

'Barely alive.' Gavin thought and encased him with his ice once more.

Lifting him up, Gavin flicked his hand to distinguish the fire while he dragged away the officer from the absolutely devastated battlefield now only filled with ice, despair, and the bodies of the fallen officers.
