Chapter 9 - Chapter 8: The Village Chief's Nephew

"Would you look at that? If it isn't the freakshow, Hestia." a mocking voice then came. Oh great. Of all times, why did he show up now?!

I whipped my head around and saw a gang of boys with their wooden swords. Like I said before, our village teach the boys how to fight monsters off which is why they have a weapon on them like a sword for example. Seems like they just finished their morning training, seeing that they are all sweaty.

"Oh? Who's this? Don't tell me you've made a new friend? Is she also a freakshow like you?" one of the boys said, pointing their finger at me. He was Hakim Norwegian, the big bully of the village, and the nephew of the Village Chief. All of the boys behind him snickered after hearing his remark.

"Well--" as I was about to retort back, Thana blocked me. Thana? What are you doing?

"Back off." Thana said in her usual blunt tone.

Thana is currently blocking my view towards Hakim but I can tell that he's boiling with anger right now. What is she doing right now?!

"Back off? Hah, who do you think you're ordering around? I'm the next Village Chief!" Hakim said in a dangerous voice, a vein pulsating on his forehead.

"No you aren't." Thana answered bluntly.

"Thana! Stop it." I whispered in a exasperated tone as I tugged on her sleeve. I didn't want Thana to get on the Village Chief's bad side since she's new here. Even if Hakim is such a jerk, he's still the Village Chief's nephew. His father is the second most influential man in the village.

Thana merely frowned as she looked at me with a disapproving look and returned her gaze upon Hakim and his gang.

"What are you looking at you creep?! Wanna piece of me?!" Hakim shouted as he threatened Thana.

"Gladly." Thana answered. Huh? What did she mean by that? "I'll gladly take a piece of you. Perhaps your tongue would do." Thana continued as she smiled wickedly, shocking the whole lot of us.

"W-what?" Hakim said confused on how he should reply, taking a step back along with the other boys.

Well I don't blame them for being scared, since Thana literally just asked for Hakim's tongue. Sigh* she really is a crazy girl. Now I'm kinda regretting of trying to defend her earlier against this idiots, she's clearly capable of fighting them off. Anyhow, I should take responsibility for this, as I chose to let her stay rather than kicking her out last night.

Recollecting myself, I put on my usual sassy demeanor I use whenever I'm with Hakim and retorted, "Oh? So now you're afraid? And you call yourself the next Village Chief. What good would it be if they have a coward for a chief?" I then tilted my head and smiled, "Then again you are merely the nephew, Dillon is way~ better than you. Since he is the Village Chief's son and has a nice head on his shoulders, compared to you that is."

Taken aback, he tried to reach for his sword. Unlike a wooden sword like the other boys his age, his sword is made out of iron. However before we could all react, Thana raised her hand and a blue light shot through the air. Her eyes gleamed off a blue light as she spoke of a foreign language I do not recognize. Moments later, Hakim's sword was flying across the sky and he was screaming in agony. Concerned from the screams, I looked at his hand which he was cradling so dearly, and I realized that icicles were forming on his hand, giving him excruciating pain. All we could do was stare at the two of them in bewilderment.

"Y-you..." Hakim uttered in a shaky voice, pointing his unfrozen finger towards Thana, "You're an Ice Mage aren't you?!"

--Meanwhile--

Thana...that girl really has a lot going on with her. She claims she doesn't remember what happened to her these past 6 years. Her reaction towards the Ice Mages' extinction was too realistic. And she seems like a vulnerable and innocent child for crying such tears earlier.

However, the look in her eyes before we brought up the Ice Mages, it was like staring at the eyes of a skilled mercenary who has experienced several tragedies from a young age. The eyes of a killer, if I should rephrase it. Even the way she talked, she sounded like a person with no emotions despite her sassiness. No, that wasn't sassiness, it was simply insanity.

Sigh*, I'm really having a hard time interpreting her true intentions. Is she lying or not? Did she really come here by accident or is there some ulterior motif?

"Daddy? Are you alright?" Chiyo suddenly asked, bringing me back to reality. We are currently in the living room, I was 'assigned' to keep Chiyo company since it was my day-off. Chiyo must have noticed that I was in a daze that it made her worried.

"O-of course, why do you ask little Chiyo?" I replied, casting a gentle smile as I patted her head.

"Well, it's just that you seemed to be focused on something even if it's your day-off." Chiyo said, fiddling with her little fingers a bit.

Gah! My daughter is so cute that it's killing me!

But then, a strange gleam appeared in her eyes, "But daddy, are you perhaps troubled about Thana? You know, she seemed familiar like I've seen her in a window. Eh no need to keep thinking about that right, daddy?" Chiyo asked in an 'innocent' voice.

Thump*, huh? What--

"FABIAN!!! YOU BASTARD!!!"

"What was that?!" I demanded. I swiftly headed to our door where the shout came from, Chiyo following closely behind.

And there I found my wife, Charlotte, arguing with Harris Norwegian, the younger brother of the Village Chief.

"Harris, what's going on here?!" I intervened, blocking Charlotte from Harris.

"What's going on here!? I should ask you the same, Fabian! What's an Ice Mage doing with your daughter?! And how dare they harm my son, Hakim?!" Harris demanded angrily.
