Chereads / Project Arachnid: Spiderman / Chapter 3 - Unleashing My Powers

Chapter 3 - Unleashing My Powers

We waited for the bus to arrive, my mind couldn't help but replay the events of the day. From Flash's taunts to my sudden ability to dodge his punches, it all seemed so surreal. Was I really capable of such things? Or was it just a fluke?

Despite my doubts, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was different. My senses felt sharper, my reflexes quicker. It was as if I had unlocked a hidden potential within myself.

But how? What had changed?

My thoughts were interrupted as the bus pulled up to the curb. Gwen, Ned, and I boarded the bus, taking our seats and settling in for the ride to School. As the bus drove through the bustling streets of New York City, I can't help but feel a sense of excitement building within me.

Ned turned to me and asked, "Patrick, how were you able to dodge Flash's punches like that? It was like you were moving in slow motion."

I shrugged my shoulders, still unsure of what had happened. "I don't know, Ned. It all happened so fast. It was like my body just knew what to do."

I felt a pang of guilt wash over me. I knew that the spider bite was the reason for my newfound abilities, but I couldn't exactly tell Ned that. Not yet, at least. So instead, I gave him a fake answer.

"I don't know, man," I said with a shrug. "Just a stroke of luck, I guess."

Gwen looked at me skeptically, not fully buying my excuse. I could sense that she suspected I was hiding something from them.

"What's really going on, Patrick?" she asked, her tone serious.

I hesitated, unsure of how to respond. I didn't want to lie to my friends, but at the same time, I couldn't reveal the truth about the spider bite.

"It's nothing, Gwen," I said, forcing a smile. "Just a lucky dodge, that's all."

Ned joined in, "Yeah, Patrick, that doesn't seem like a believable explanation. You've never been one for sports or physical activity, so it's hard to believe that you suddenly became so agile today."

I felt a lump form in my throat as Ned and Gwen questioned my explanation. I couldn't tell them about the spider bite - it was too strange, too unbelievable.

"I don't know," I said, my voice cracking slightly. "Maybe it was just a lucky dodge. And maybe I've been secretly working out, who knows?" I tried to sound convincing, but deep down, I knew they weren't buying it.

"What's going on, Patrick? You're not telling us something," Gwen said, her eyes narrowing in suspicion.

I tried to keep my composure, but their skepticism was starting to get to me. I couldn't reveal the truth about the spider bite, not yet at least. What if they thought I was crazy? Or worse, what if Oscorp found out and took me away for testing?

"I swear, that's all it was. A lucky dodge and maybe a little bit of secret training," I replied, hoping they would drop the subject.

But Gwen and Ned didn't look convinced, and I knew I had to be more careful from now on. The last thing I wanted was to put my friends or myself in danger because of my secret.

I took a deep breath and turned to face Gwen and Ned. "Look, I appreciate your concern, but there's nothing to worry about. I'm sure it was just a lucky dodge, and maybe I've been more active than I let on. I promise I'll tell you if anything changes or if I figure out what happened."

I hoped my friends would believe my explanation, but deep down, I knew the truth. The spider bite was the only explanation that made sense. But I couldn't risk revealing my secret. Not yet, at least.

Ned crossed his arms, still unconvinced. "I don't know, man. It just seems strange, that's all."

Gwen nodded in agreement, her expression serious. "I hear you, Patrick. But we know you well enough to know that dodging punches isn't exactly your strong suit. It just seems... unlikely, you know?"

Ned chimed in, looking at me with concern. "We're just worried about you, man. If something's going on, we want to help. You can talk to us."

I felt grateful for my friends' concern, but I couldn't reveal the truth about the spider bite. "I appreciate your concern, guys. But trust me, there's nothing to worry about. Maybe I just got lucky or maybe I'm more capable than I thought. Either way, I'm fine now, and that's all that matters." I gave them a reassuring smile, hoping to put their doubts to rest.

Gwen furrowed her brow in concern. "Are you sure everything's okay, Patrick? You seem different somehow. Maybe you should go see a doctor."

Ned nodded in agreement. "Yeah, I mean, if something's wrong, it's better to catch it early before it gets worse. And who knows, maybe there's a simple explanation for all of this."

I shifted in my seat, feeling uneasy about my friends' suspicion. I knew that my sudden agility and reflexes were not just a stroke of luck or hidden workouts. The spider bite had to be the reason, but I couldn't tell them that, not yet at least.

With a forced smile, I tried to ease their concerns. "Thanks, guys. I appreciate your concern, but I'm sure everything's fine. Maybe it was just a fluke. I'll keep an eye on things, just to be safe."

Gwen and Ned seemed to accept my answer and dropped their suspicions. I breathed a sigh of relief, glad that they believed me.

"Okay, Patrick, we trust you," Gwen said with a smile.

"Yeah, man, we're just glad you're okay," Ned added.

I smiled back at them, feeling grateful for their trust and support. "Thanks, guys. I appreciate it. And don't worry, I'll be careful from now on."

As the bus made its way through the city, my mind continued to wander. I couldn't shake the feeling that the spider bite was somehow connected to my newfound abilities. Could it have been the spider bite that gave me these abilities? It was the only thing that had happened to me recently that could explain the sudden change. The spider had somehow altered my DNA, giving me these newfound abilities. It was an unsettling thought, but it was the only explanation that made sense.

"Dad, what did you do to that spider?" I muttered under my breath, my mind racing with the possibilities of what could have happened.

I turned to see Ned looking at me curiously. "Oh, it's nothing," I said quickly, trying to play it off. "Just thinking about something."

Ned raised an eyebrow but didn't press further. "Alright, man, if you say so," he said, shrugging it off.

Gwen gave me a knowing look, but didn't say anything either. I was grateful for their trust, but at the same time, I couldn't shake off the feeling that I was keeping a dangerous secret from them.

My mind kept returning to the possibilities that my newfound abilities presented. What could I do with them? How far could I push them? The more I thought about it, the more excited I became. I felt like I had been given a gift, a new lease on life, and I couldn't wait to see what I could do with it.

But at the same time, I couldn't shake the feeling of unease that came with the unknown. What if I couldn't control my powers? What if I hurt someone by accident? There were so many variables to consider, so many unknowns that I couldn't predict.

Despite my apprehension, I was determined to make the most of my abilities. I knew that with great power came great responsibility, like Uncle Ben said, and I was ready to take on that responsibility. I just hoped that I was up for the challenge.

"Guess I'll have to figure it out for myself," I muttered to myself, lost in thought.

"What do you mean, Patrick?" Ned asked, looking at me quizzically.

I looked up, realizing that I had spoken aloud. "Oh, nothing, just thinking out loud," I replied, trying to play it off.

But the truth was, I was excited and curious about my newfound abilities.

As the bus came to a stop, I gathered my things and got off with the rest of the students. I saw Ned and Gwen walking ahead of me, and I jogged to catch up with them.

"Hey guys, I gotta go to work now. I'll see you tomorrow," I said, waving goodbye as I headed towards my part-time job at the local convenience store.

"See you later, Patrick," Gwen said with a smile.

"Yeah, take care," Ned added, giving me a friendly pat on the back. "Don't work too hard."

I waved one last time before heading towards the convenience store.

Luckily the convenience that I work at isn't far enough from school it's only a 5 minute walk from school.

I arrived at the front of the store it's futuristic and cyberpunk-style appearance of the building. The neon lights, metallic finishes, and advanced technology gave the store a unique and modern feel.

As I entered the convenience store, I saw my boss Maine standing behind the counter, his muscular build and he had brown skin, close-cropped hair giving away his military background. He wore a black t-shirt and cargo pants, and his arms were covered in tattoos that peeked out from under his shirt sleeves. Despite his tough appearance, Maine had a kind heart and always looked out for his employees.

"Hey, Maine. I'm here for my shift," I said.

Maine nodded and handed me my work apron. "Good to see you, Patrick. You know the drill," he said with a smile.

"What took you so long, Patrick?" I heard a voice behind me. The next thing I knew, I felt a sharp smack on the back of my head with a rolled-up magazine. I turned to see Rebecca standing there, looking irritated.

I rubbed the back of my head and gave her an apologetic smile. "Sorry, Rebecca. The bus was running a little late today."

Rebecca was a petite woman in her early 20s with a short, fair skin, messy ponytail. She was wearing the standard work apron over her clothes, which consisted of a black t-shirt and jeans. Despite her small size, she had a tough demeanor and a sharp tongue, which she often used to berate me for being late or not doing my job properly.

Rebecca raised an eyebrow skeptically. "Uh-huh, sure it was. Well, if you're lying to me, I'll hit you with this magazine," she threatened, holding up the magazine she had smacked me with earlier.

"I'm not lying, I swear. The bus really was running late," I replied quickly, holding my hands up in a gesture of surrender. I didn't want to risk getting hit with the magazine again.

"Fine, but you better not be late again," Rebecca warned, pointing the magazine at me for emphasis. "We've got a lot of work to do today, and I don't have time to babysit you."

I nodded, feeling grateful that she let it go. "Don't worry, I'll make up for lost time."

"Hey Maine, where's the new shipment?" I asked him.

"At the back, where Dorio and Pilar are sorting out the boxes," Maine replied gruffly, not looking up from the magazine he was reading.

"Thanks," I said, turning to Rebecca. "Let's go check it out."

Rebecca rolled her eyes but followed me to the back of the store.

Me and Rebecca entered the back room of the convenience store, I saw Dorio and Pillar sorting through boxes of new shipments.

Dorio was a muscular woman with blonde hair and piercing blue eyes. She was the right-hand person to Maine, the manager of the store.

"Hey, Dorio," I greeted her with a nod.

"What's up, Patrick" she replied, giving me a quick smile before returning to her work.

"What took you so long, man?" Pilar asked with a smirk.

Pilar was a tall man with a lean build, sporting a spiky mohawk and a cigarette hanging from his lips. His sharp features were set in a perpetually serious expression, giving him an air of quiet intensity.

I rolled my eyes. "The bus was running late."

Rebecca chimed in, "Excuses, excuses. Just get to work already, Patrick."

"Got it, Rebecca," I said as I headed over to the shelves to start restocking.

I decided to experiment a little. I reached for a heavier box, one that would normally require a bit more effort to lift. But as I grasped it, it felt like it weighed nothing at all. With barely any effort, I lifted the box and placed it on the shelf.

"That was easy," I muttered to myself, feeling a little giddy with excitement.

As I continued stocking the shelves, my mind wandered back to my newfound abilities. I wondered what else I could do with them, and if there were any limitations to what I could achieve. I lifted another box with ease, barely feeling its weight, and started to speculate.

Maybe I could jump higher than normal or run faster than anyone else. Maybe I could even fly like a superhero. The possibilities were endless, and my curiosity was piqued.

But then I started to wonder if there were any downsides to my new abilities. Could they be dangerous? Could they attract unwanted attention? I knew I had to be careful with who I shared my secret with and how I used my newfound powers.

I decided to experiment a bit more, just to see what I was capable of. I lifted another box, this time trying to do it with just one hand. To my surprise, it was effortless. I could feel the power coursing through my veins, and it was exhilarating.

But then I heard Rebecca's voice, snapping me out of my thoughts. "Patrick, stop daydreaming and get back to work!" she scolded.

I sighed and continued stocking the shelves, realizing that for now, I had to keep my abilities a secret and just focus on my job. But in the back of my mind, I knew that I couldn't wait to test out my powers more.

After a few minutes of stocking the shelves, Rebecca let out a loud sigh and complained, "There are so many boxes to unpack. I don't know if we'll ever finish in time."

Pilar grumbled in agreement, taking a drag from his cigarette before adding, "Yeah, there's no end to these boxes. Maine should've hired more people to help us out."

Dorio, on the other hand, didn't seem bothered by the workload. She was diligently helping out The Manager in the corner, quietly going about her tasks.

I took a deep breath and tried to lift another box, but this time it felt even lighter than before. My mind started racing with the possibilities of what else I could do with my newfound abilities. Could I run faster than before? Jump higher? Lift even heavier objects?

Lost in thought, I almost didn't notice when Rebecca spoke up again. "Hey, Patrick, you okay? You seem distracted," she asked, raising an eyebrow at me.

I shook my head, snapping out of my thoughts. "Yeah, sorry about that. I was just thinking about something," I replied.

Rebecca rolled her eyes. "Well, save it for later. We've got work to do," she said, motioning towards the boxes.

I took a deep breath, trying to refocus on the task at hand. "Right, sorry about that. How's your day been so far, Rebecca?" I asked, trying to make conversation to lighten the mood.

Rebecca shrugged. "It's been alright, just busy. Trying to get all this stuff organized and ready for inventory is a pain, but it's gotta get done," she replied, sounding a bit frazzled.

I nodded sympathetically. "Yeah, I know what you mean. It's a lot of work, but we'll get through it."

"Thanks, Patrick. I appreciate it," Rebecca said with a small smile. "But how about you? How's your day been?"

I smiled back at her. "It's been good so far. Just trying to adjust to my new job and get settled in, you know?"

"Yeah, I get that. It can be tough starting something new, but you'll get the hang of it in no time," she said encouragingly. "Just keep at it and don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it."

"Thanks, Rebecca. You really are kind," I said with a grin.

Rebecca playfully punched me in the shoulder, and her cheeks flushed pink for a few seconds before she regained her composure. I couldn't help but laugh at her reaction.

"I guess you don't have a bad reputation for being rough with others, huh?" I joked.

Rebecca rolled her eyes but couldn't hide the hint of a smile on her lips. "Shut up and get back to work, Patrick," she teased, nudging me towards the boxes.

I chuckled and got back to work, feeling grateful for the friendly work environment and the kind coworkers like Rebecca.

So we finished unpacking the boxes, Dorio checked her watch and announced, "Alright guys, let's take a five-minute break."

We all gathered around the break room table, and Rebecca let out a sigh of relief. "Man, there were so many boxes to unpack. I feel like my arms are going to fall off."

Pilar grumbled in agreement, taking a long drag from his cigarette. "I know, right? And we still have more to go."

Dorio, on the other hand, didn't complain at all. She simply leaned back in her chair and smiled at all of us. "You guys did a great job. We couldn't have done it without you."

Rebecca beamed at the compliment, and Pilar smirked. "Yeah, we're pretty amazing, aren't we?" he joked.

"Oh, shut up," Rebecca playfully punched Pilar's arm. "We wouldn't have been able to do it without Dorio and Patrick either."

I was surprised when Rebecca included me in the compliments. I couldn't help but smile as she praised my work. "Thanks, Rebecca. I didn't expect to be included in that," I said.

Dorio chuckled and chimed in. "Don't sell yourself short, Patrick. You've been a great addition to the team."

It was hard to believe that I had been working at the convenience store for over a year now. Time had flown by, but in that time, I had become an integral part of the team. These co-workers had become like family to me, and I felt grateful to have a job where I was appreciated and valued.

Maine walked into the break room and asked, "How's my team doing?"

"We're doing great," Dorio replied.

Maine leaned against the wall and crossed his arms. "That's good to hear. You guys have been working hard, and I appreciate all of your efforts."

Rebecca immediately started complaining, "There are so many boxes to unpack, Maine. My arms are killing me."

Pilar grumbled in agreement, taking another drag from his cigarette. "Yeah, we're drowning in shipments here."

I chimed in, "I'm glad to help, Maine. It's always busy, but I feel like we're getting things done."

Maine nodded. "Good to hear. Keep up the good work, everyone."

I felt proud to be a part of Maine's team, and I knew that we were all in this together. Despite the long hours and hard work, I felt grateful for this job and the people I worked with.

He then added, "Once you guys finish unpacking all those boxes, feel free to help yourselves to whatever snacks or drinks you want from the store. Consider it a thank you from me."

Everyone at the table smiled and agreed with Maine's offer. It was a nice perk of the job to be able to enjoy some snacks during our break. I felt lucky to have a manager who cared about his employees and showed his appreciation in small ways like this.

The break was over before I knew it, and everyone went back to work. Dorio was the first one to get back to sorting through the boxes. Rebecca let out a groan, "Break's already over? That was quick."

Pilar grumbled in agreement, taking another drag from his cigarette. I, on the other hand, just continued working like Dorio, trying to finish up the remaining boxes as quickly and efficiently as possible.

After what felt like hours, we finally unpacked the last box. I let out a sigh of relief and wiped the sweat off my forehead. It was over.

Pilar cheered loudly, and Rebecca joined in. Even Dorio couldn't help but laugh at their antics. I couldn't help but chuckle at them. It was moments like this that made the hard work worth it.

"Great job, everyone," Maine said as he walked into the back room. "I knew I could count on my team."

We all grinned at the praise and helped ourselves to some snacks and drinks from the store shelves. It was a small but well-deserved reward for a job well done. As the others cheered and laughed, Maine called out to me and motioned for me to come to his office. I followed him and wondered what he wanted to talk to me about.

Once we were inside his office, Maine handed me an envelope. "Here's your paycheck, Patrick. You earned it," he said with a smile.

I opened the envelope and looked at the check inside. It was more than I expected, and I was surprised to see that there was extra money included.

"Is this a mistake?" I asked, looking up at Maine.

He chuckled. "No, it's not a mistake. You've been doing a great job, and I wanted to show my appreciation. Consider it a bonus."

I was grateful for the unexpected bonus and thanked Maine for it. As I left his office and headed back to the break room, I feel proud of myself for the hard work I had put in.

I gather my things and went out of the break room. Say my goodbye to my team and Maine As I headed home.

"Hey, Patrick," Rebecca called out as I walked past her. "See you tomorrow!"

"Take care, Patrick," Dorio said, giving me a wave.

Pilar grunted a goodbye and flicked his cigarette into the ashtray.

Maine walked me out, patting me on the back. "Thanks for all your hard work today, Patrick. You did great."

I smiled at him. "Thanks, Maine. See you tomorrow."

I walked out of the store, I felt a sense of satisfaction wash over me. It was a long day, but I had made it through. And with a little extra cash in my pocket, I knew it was worth it. I walked, an idea suddenly struck me -- I could use my newfound powers to get home faster. The thought made me grin, and I started looking for a place to practice my spider-like abilities.

I searched for a secluded spot to test out my new abilities. An alley with tall, brick walls caught my eye, and I headed towards it. As I reached the alley, I paused for a moment to take a deep breath and clear my mind.

It was already late at night, around 9 pm, but I was determined to try. I started by attempting to climb the brick walls, but my first few tries were unsuccessful.

I took a deep breath and tried again. This time, I focused on using the tiny, sticky hairs on my fingertips to grip the rough surface of the wall. To my surprise, it worked, and I was able to climb a few feet up.

Excitement surged through me, and I let out a whoop of joy. But then, I lost my grip and fell back down to the ground. I groaned in frustration and rubbed my sore hands.

"Are you okay?" a voice called out from behind me.

I turned to see a man walking towards me. He had a concerned expression on his face, and I realized that I must have looked like a crazy person, trying to climb a building in the middle of the night.

"Yeah, I'm fine," I replied, trying to act casual. "Just...trying something new."

The man raised an eyebrow. "Uh huh. Well, be careful. It's not safe to climb buildings like that."

I nodded, feeling a bit embarrassed. "Thanks. I will."

The man walked away, and I took a deep breath. I knew I had to be more careful, feeling excited about my new abilities. I decided to try again, this time being more cautious.

I crouched down and pressed my fingertips against the wall, feeling the tiny hairs on my skin begin to stick. I took a deep breath and slowly started to climb, making sure to move carefully and not make any sudden movements.

It was slow going, but I was making progress. My fingers were starting to ache from the effort, but I was determined to reach the top. As I climbed higher, I began to feel more confident in my abilities.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, I reached the top of the building. I let out a whoop of triumph and collapsed onto the roof, feeling exhilarated and exhausted all at once.

I sat there for a few moments, catching my breath and admiring the view. From up here, the city looked completely different -- like a whole new world waiting to be explored.

I knew I had a lot to learn about my new powers, but I was excited to see where this journey would take me.

"That was awesome," I thought to myself, feeling a surge of pride.

But then, I heard a noise behind me. I turned around to see the man from earlier, standing at the rooftop entrance.

"What the hell are you doing up here?" he demanded, looking angry.

"I...uh..." I stuttered, feeling caught off guard. "I was just...practicing my climbing."

The man rolled his eyes. "You could have seriously hurt yourself, you know that? And what if someone saw you? Do you want to get arrested?"

I felt a pang of guilt and nodded. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to cause any trouble."

The man sighed and shook his head. "Just be careful, okay? And maybe find a safer place to practice."

I nodded, feeling ashamed of my reckless behavior. "Yeah, you're right. Thanks for the warning."

As the man walked away, I took a deep breath and tried to push aside my disappointment. I had climbed the building, and that was something to be proud of. But I knew that I had to be more responsible and considerate in the future.

Excitement still coursing through my veins, I glanced around, searching for my next challenge. That's when I remembered another unique trait of spiders - they could jump incredibly high.

I stood on the rooftop, looking out at the cityscape below, a new idea popped into my head. Spiders can jump higher than they can climb, so why not give it a try?

I took a deep breath and backed up a few steps, then sprinted towards the edge of the roof. With all my might, I leaped into the air, hoping for the best.

To my surprise, I soared through the air with ease, covering more distance than I ever thought possible. "Whoa, that was crazy!" I exclaimed to myself.

I landed on the rooftop of a nearby building and grinned from ear to ear. I had to try it again.

I took a few steps back and ran towards the edge of the roof once more, leaping into the air with all my might. This time, I traveled even further, landing on the rooftop of yet another building.

"This is amazing!" I shouted to no one in particular.

I continued to jump from roof to roof, the exhilaration of it all filled me with a sense of freedom and excitement. This was truly a whole new world for me.

I paused for a moment and looked down at my hands, remembering that spiders can shoot webs. Maybe I could do that too?

I tried to focus my energy on my hands, envisioning the thin strands of spider webbing coming out of my fingertips. But after several attempts, I still couldn't seem to make it work.

"Come on, come on!" I muttered to myself, trying again and again, but to no avail.

I sat down on the edge of the rooftop, feeling a bit frustrated. Maybe this was a power I couldn't quite master yet. But I wasn't going to give up just yet.

I again tried to shoot webs from my fingertips, I quickly realized that my attempt was futile. "Webs aren't going to come out of my fingertips," I muttered to myself in frustration.

I tried different finger poses, twisting my fingers in various ways, hoping to trigger some sort of mechanism that would release the web. After several failed attempts, I finally stumbled upon the right finger pose. I held up my hand, forming a rock sign with my fingers, and to my amazement, a thin stream of web shot out from my wrist.

"Whoa!" I exclaimed, staring at my hand in disbelief. "It really does work!"

Excited to test out my new power, I shot another stream of web towards a nearby building, but it fell short and splattered on the ground.

"Okay, so maybe I need to work on my aim," I muttered to myself, determined to master this new ability.

I spent the next few minutes practicing shooting webs from my wrist and experimenting with it. I made a ball out of the web and even created a hammock to rest on.

After a while, I realized my aim was off and my webs kept falling short of their target. So, I spent some time focusing on my aim and after a few tries, I finally got the hang of it.

I got another idea. What if I could use the web as a swing?

In my first attempt to swing using the web, I failed miserably. I swung towards the building but ended up hitting the wall and falling flat on my back.

"Agh! That hurt," I groaned, trying to get up. I attempted to swing again and again, but I just couldn't seem to get the hang of it. The pain of hitting the wall multiple times was starting to take its toll on me.

I groaned as I hit the wall yet again. "I don't know how much more of this I can take."

But with each failed attempt, the pain grew more intense. I gritted my teeth and pushed through it, determined to master this new skill.

"Come on, you can do this," I muttered

Finally, after many failed attempts, I managed to swing gracefully through the air. The feeling of weightlessness and freedom was indescribable.

"This is incredible!" I shouted in excitement, feeling like I was on top of the world.

Despite the pain and frustration, it was all worth it in the end. I felt like I had accomplished something incredible, and I knew that with practice, I could only get better.

I swung my way to the nearby pharmacy, the pain from my earlier failed attempts at swinging lingered in my body. But I pushed through it, determined to get the medicine Aunt May needed.

I made sure to swing carefully, not wanting to aggravate my injuries any further. The feeling of wind against my face was exhilarating, but also a painful reminder of my earlier failures.

But despite the pain, I can't help but feel a big grin spread across my face as I swung through the air. The rush of adrenaline and the sense of freedom was like nothing else in the world.

Finally, I reached the pharmacy and quickly bought the medicine before swinging my way back home. The pain was still there, but it was nothing compared to the sense of accomplishment and the thrill of swinging through the city like a superhero.
