Zoe found her behavior strange. Mary was worried for her which she could understand, as they already have a bond of being friends. But at the same time it felt like she was siding with Maximus. As if she didn't want him to be too troubled by her. The way she spoke was as if she knew the man and had been involved with him in the past. She carefully sized Mary up, giving the young lady a suspicious look.
"Now that's weird. That is suspicious." She repeated the lines Mary's favorite celebrity, Cardi B had said in one of her videos. It was one normal morning, a few days ago, that she caught Mary looking at something on her phone and beaming with a bright smile. At first she thought the young lady had found someone that interested her but only found out she was watching a clip on her favorite celeb.
Mary had a bright smile and focused on what she was doing. "What is weird?"
"It sounds like you are taking Maximus' side as well. Or am I reading too much into this Dan?" She leaned backward and questioned the male worker who gave her a faint and knowing smile. Now Zoe was sure there was something going on. Something they both knew but she didn't.
"I am not and it is wrong to call the King by his name. In the past, I used to sleep with the King." She drops the plate and stares at the cool blue coloured marble tiles in front. Tracing her fingers across the tiles, she began to reminisce about the time and the frown on Zoe's face grew the more she smiled. "Back then, I had the King's favor. We had just won a battle with the Vampires of Naya and gained dominance over them so his highness was in a good mood. I was a spy for the Lupus family and gave them good information even though I lived along the vampires then."
"So you spied on the ones that gave you protection for someone as unworthy as Maximus?"
Mary and Dan gave her an incredulous look before Dan released a sigh. "Dont look at her like that. Poor Zoe has been sheltered her whole life, so she has no idea how the world really works. Home schooled, she probably doesn't know any street in her own home country."
And he was right. She didn't go to a normal high school like everyone else. No female in their family did. It was a means of protecting them from men. She wasn't used to leaving the house and whenever she did, it was usually a short trip to the department store to get some fancy clothes or to the bookstore and she was always accompanied by bodyguards. Dan was right. Apart from the street that led to her house which she was familiar with, she didn't know any other place in Athens. And she had been born and grew up there. Thinking about it, she has truly been sheltered her whole life and has no idea how the world really works. Perhaps that was why she was so shocked about how tyrannical and wicked Maximus turned out to be.
"Which I think is the reason why you still can't see how dangerous a wolf the king is. Back then I liked the king's wolf. Have you seen it?" Mary had a dreamy look on as she questioned.
Zoe gave her a positive nod. She couldn't say countless times as she could count the number of times she has seen it if she puts her mind to it. The first time was at OO1. Unlike his not very good looking self, Maximus Wolf was very attractive. When she had first seen it in OO1, it was its white fur and piercing white eyes that attracted her to him. Those eyes, they were so white and so bright under the moonlight, it felt like the wolf had descended from heaven. Like an angel wolf. Even now, Zoe doubts if she would ever be able to see a wolf as gorgeous as his. The first time Maximus had transformed in her presence was when she was eating at the dining. She suddenly heard a loud cracking sound and stepped up to look, only to see him in the hallway. His fangs were out and his eyes shone brighter. He glanced at her and ignored her, continuing with his transformation .
The cracking of bone made Zoe imagine how painful the transition must be. But Maximus didn't seem to be in pain. His wolf was above average. Probably the biggest. It was far taller than her. When she stood in front of it at OO1, it overshadowed her by a lot. The second time, she was on her way to her room when she saw it laying in the middle of the hallway, the path that led to her room. Scared, she held her chest and almost kicked it.
"Dont go around scaring people like that. Move out of the way." She had shouted and Maximus, like an obedient little dog, rose and moved his wolf to the side so that she could walk over. She slammed her door and locked it. A few minutes later she could hear it howling in front of her door. She didn't know when she fell asleep, but when she woke up to use the toilet, she could still feel its domineering presence.
The third time would be this coming Thursday when he would make her play the violin while sitting on ice.
"It is indeed beautiful." She admits smiling at Mary.
"His highness brought me to OO1 and I spent my first night with the King. It continued throughout the week until he didn't call for me anymore the following week." She looked a little sad. "But it's how things work. The King has his own...I dare not say shortcomings but to me, it would forever be an honor to have been favored by the king."
Mary wasn't considered average looking. She is a gorgeous young lady with bright blue eyes, shoulder length blonde hair and a pointy nose. Her lips were thin and her cheek bones were well defined. If she hadn't known that she grew up poor, Zoe would have thought she had plastic surgery done. She also wasn't lacking in the boobs department as her chest was supple and bumby. Even if the man is ugly, at least his taste isn't. She could give that to him.
