The body had a limited amount of life force it could spare at a time, and the way it did so was… odd.
If one was harmed by say, a sword, then the body would start diverting its spare life force to the stab wound, pouring in life force at the cap's maximum. But, if you added another stab wound elsewhere, then the body was in a predicament.
It didn't discriminate by severity, so even if this new stab wound cut into your kidney while the other just skewered your arm, the body would still halve the life force between both areas. Now, instead of 100% of the cap going to one area, only 50% went to both.
