She dreamed of sounds as colors, lighting up the sky. Sometimes, she felt her parents in them, other times, she just felt things she didn't understand, and the dream put them into song anyways.
Maya awoke to a house full of noise. After taking care of her bathroom needs, she walked out to find a bunch of strangers sitting at the breakfast table, talking excitedly over bacon - her favorite -, scrambled eggs, toast, dumplings, tea, cloudberry jelly - her favorite-favorite -, and stuffed beets.
The last did not even merit thinking about as Maya climbed up into a seat, at least not until Auntie Amri put a plate with not one but two stuffed beets in front of her. Maya rotated the plate so the beets were as far away from her as possible while she picked up a piece of bacon and crunched into it.
