As the sun rose over the horizon, Captain Xiaodan Xu and Warrant Officer Quynh Meng drove into the dusty village of Tavas, one-third of the way from the capital to the border.
After more than a year of independent operations, Xu - who preferred to think of herself by her more efficient last name than her first name - and Quynh had enough contacts in the area to where a major event in the desert could draw her out of the city.
To be fair, it was Quynh who maintained the contacts, mostly through her guise as an herbologist and practitioner of traditional Aviyan medicine... as well as arts far more traditional than other practitioners had ever conceived. But Xu did the driving since she had a far better memory for routes.
