Chapter 9 - Magician versus Memory Mage

Choo! Choo!

The gear of the train kept on moving, as the view outside started to change. Houses, factories, and buildings of some sort began to replace the plains. It meant that the train was approaching its destination.

However, what was happening outside did not matter to those on the train.

Seeing the stranger smile at him, Meyer felt a foreboding danger, especially since the target was not who he was expecting. As a high-ranking member of his group, however, he had the obligation to make sure their plan succeed and to root out dangers before they blossomed.

The spiritual trace is definitely coming from this man. So he is not Melvin all along?

Meyer did not recklessly approach the man but assessed the situation first.

His confidence means he is prepared to fight me. I'd better end the fight as soon as I can.

Blood... he must have killed some of the guys. Is Leanna alive? He knew to kill my double, so he must have gotten information about me somehow.

Without approaching the man, Meyer held out his hand and suddenly, a ball of flame appeared. It was the size of a basketball, and it was emitting a lot of heat. Without giving the enemy a chance to react, he threw the flaming hot object at him.

Swoosh!

Seeing the fireball, the black-haired man dodged to the side without much difficulty.

His reaction speed is too good. He must be an agile type. A Hunter? A Thief? No matter, I just need to kill him as quickly as possible.

Meyer snapped his fingers and the fireball that had missed the target suddenly contorted, and then...

Kaboom!

It exploded!

It was a Magician's skill Fire Manipulation. He was able to manipulate any fire around him at the cost of his own spirituality.

The explosion that Meyer created was really strong that he considered it his strongest attack yet. It was powerful enough to blow off the metal door and caused a huge dent in the metal wall. The interior was all burned and smoke rose in the carriage.

With the door gone, the outside sound was no longer blocked off, and the sound of the train engine became much louder. However, Meyer was not affected in any way. In fact, the loud sound of the explosion did not affect him at all.

Water Manipulation!

There were water bubbles covering both his ears, blocking the loud sound that otherwise could have damaged his eardrums. There was also a trace of a water shield that protected him from the explosion itself.

Meyer combed his brown, messy hair back with his fingers.

As a Magician, he had more supernatural energy than most Unnaturals. However, such a big attack would still consume a lot of it, so he couldn't perform another big attack until he regenerated some. He also had to turn off his spiritual detection to conserve spirituality, since it consumed a lot of spiritual energy per second.

That should be enough to kill him, but I cannot let my guard down yet until I confirm it.

Because of the hole where the door was, the smoke caused by the explosion quickly dissipated.

Meyer scanned the area closely while regenerating his spiritual energy. He was trying to see any silhouette from behind the smoke, and as it got clearer, he could see something that looked like a body lying down.

Did I get him? He thought, without lowering his guard.

Bang!

Suddenly, a bullet was shot in the direction of his head.

Meyer, who was not the fastest Unnatural, would normally be unable to dodge it. However, since he was always cautious, he had created another water shield in front of him in advance. It looked like a thin layer of membrane, but it was strong enough to block some attacks.

The shield caught the bullet, but as if not affected much, it penetrated straight through.

"Fuck!" he cried in pain.

If I hadn't put up the shield, the bullet would have blown my head off.

His right shoulder was wounded. With the window of opportunity that the water shield created, he could only barely dodge.

Hiss...

There was a faint sound of flesh being burned that was overshadowed by the loud noise of the train engine and an even fainter smell of burning flesh that got carried away by the wind.

Meyer cauterized his wound to stop the bleeding immediately. He would deal with the bullet later, but right now, he needed to focus on killing his enemy first.

Once the smoke had fully gone, he could see that the enemy was still alive, but he was definitely wounded. His bloody clothes were tattered, and there was blood flowing down his face; he must have hit his head due to the impact.

There was also a body lying on the floor that the man was using before as a decoy. It was the dead female leader from before.

Woosh!

Without giving the enemy another chance to shoot, Meyer conjured water droplets and shot them out like bullets.

Water Manipulation!

Knowing that the enemy had good agility, Meyer expected him to be able to dodge the 'bullets', so he predicted where he would go and prepared another attack.

He took out pieces of cut paper from his pocket and threw them with difficulty. His right hand was still in pain from the injury, but it was enough to use his ability.

Card Magic!

It was a Magician's ability to turn paper into lethal weapons.

Bang! Bang!

The water bullets hit the wall instead of the man since he was able to easily dodge them. They dispersed after creating small dents in the metal wall, leaving droplets of water on the floor.

Clank! Clank!

The black-haired man used a black shirt to defend against the paper as he landed in his spot. Strangely, the papers made a sound like they were hitting metal.

Hardening?

Meyer questioned what he saw.

That should be a Guardian's ability! That man is too fast to be a Guardian.

He started analyzing all the facts while keeping his barrage of attacks on the enemy, giving the black-haired man no chance to retaliate.

Assuming it was shapeshifting that he used to look like Melvin, and that agility, topped with a Guardian's hardening, he must be at least a Level 3 or 4 Unnatural.

I would usually never face such an enemy without p-- Meyer suddenly lost his train of thought.

Nevermind. The fact is that he is stronger than I expected, and my strongest attack couldn't kill him either. I cannot prolong this battle.

Whoosh! Whoosh!

Bullets of water kept on shooting at the black-haired man, but the strong wind from the doorway seemed to have affected them to some extent, so the man was able to dodge them all without any trouble. The intensity of the attack was what caused him to be unable to stop moving at all.

He kept on attacking and the black-haired man kept on dodging. There seemed to be no pattern in the way the enemy moved, but Meyer felt uneasy.

Is he trying to drain my spirituality? I still have enough to maintain this barrage, and he should get tired first.

Not wanting to put all his eggs in one basket, however, Meyer began preparing another spell as he cast the water bullets and the occasional throwing cards.

Clank!

The cards were still deflected by the man's makeshift shield.

Meyer's eyes were watching the battlefield carefully. He processed the flow of the battle in his mind and predicted the direction the enemy would dodge in.

The moment the black-haired man's feet touch the ground, Meyer lifted his right hand.

Swoosh!

Numerous thin water spikes were formed!

Those water spikes were created from the residual water on the floor created from the water bullets.

Unable to dodge them all, the enemy was struck by the spikes.

Hardening only works on one object at a time. So at least his ability still follows the normal norm. I should end this fight now.

Seeing blood coming out of the man's right leg, Meyer knew that the enemy would not be able to keep dodging as well as before, so he continued creating a barrage of water bullets.

This should at least pin him down, and I will be able to finish him after this.

Leap!

Suddenly, out of his expectation, the man used a movement ability to close the gap between them!

He had leaped from his position, which was now closer to the doorway where Meyer was standing.

Taken by surprise, Meyer wanted to shoot out all of his water bullets, but the man was already too close, and something prevented him from finishing his action.

"Sleep!"

A wave of drowsiness suddenly struck him. His spiritual defense was triggered, and he quickly used his spirituality to resist the spell. Although the sleep spell failed to put him to sleep, it was enough to cancel Meyer's casting.

He was aiming for this! He was dodging everything to get close enough to use that ability! This man is dangerous. I must--

Bang!

A gunshot was heard.
