Death magic was more of an instant kill. Mana itself was a neutral force and all other forms of magic was possible when mana turns positive but death magic is the opposite its a result of negative mana which is very deadly to any thing possessing a soul it diminishes a souls strength (life force) and destroys atoms demolishing the body.
