It was the second night Gustav spent barely squinting. He was tired, filled with anxiety, which was compounded by longing. He missed David so much that he felt almost physical pain. He regretted not keeping him with him.
He tried to tell himself that it would be better for both of them. He repeated it so constantly that he could actually turn those words into the truth, only he didn't succeed. The more he told himself, the more he knew they were a lie.
Then he panicked, just like that. He was so terrified at the thought that someone might have died with his involvement that he didn't think rationally. He was stupid and now he couldn't deny it.
Well, because whatever the investigation would show, he couldn't hide the truth from David indefinitely. Sooner or later David will find out about everything, and his reaction will depend on how it happens.
