The whole day wouldn't have been so terrible for David if it hadn't been for his return home. Only here, when he saw his mother's eyes reddened from crying, did he realize that if he hadn't been able to return, those eyes would have been crying a lot longer.
This woman had given him life, and there was probably no one in the world who was more afraid of losing it.
Seeing her eyes, David felt remorse for asking her to cook his favorite cauliflower soup over ribs. He felt guilty for forcing her to work when she was in such a state. However, the soup was delicious and he gobbled up three servings before finally feeling satisfied. He ate with such an appetite that his mother had no choice but to smile with satisfaction. She probably figured that since her son could eat so greedily, nothing bad had happened to him.
