As they took a step down the shorter hall a couple other voices came from the left end of the second hall, getting closer. They quickly ducked into the shorter hall. Varin crept down to the corner to keep his eyes on the first guards that they heard, making sure they stayed there as Dagen took care of the other voices. Dagen kneeled down, intently watching the left end of the second hall. 2 guards came around the corner, Dagen waited for them to be a few feet closer, making sure that no one else would appear. He took a quick glance to the left to make sure no one was sneaking up on him as he rolled into the second hall in a lying position. Hitting both guards In quick succession.
'Perfect!'
The guards let out a quick yelp as they yanked the darts out of their thighs, realizing what hit them as they faded and fell to the floor with a thud.
Dagen quickly ducked back into the shorter hall and gave Varin a thumbs up. It didn't seem like the guards Varin was watching heard what just happened in the second hall, somehow. Granted the noise wasn't too loud and happened fairly far away around 2 corners, but it seemed more like they were too invested in their own conversation to hear anything else.
'Ametures.'
They were standing with their backs to the wall near the corner Varin was crouched behind. He looked down and picked up a small walnut sized piece of wall along the edge of the floor and tossed it past the guards to the left, making sure it didn't go higher than their knees.
Right as they looked over to see what that was, Varin appeared behind the one closest to him and introduced the knife to his neck, resulting in a quick farewell. Varin quickly but quietly let him down as he stood in the guards place. Seeing that it was just a piece of rubble the other guard turned to inform his partner, only to be met with an unfamiliar face grinning at him with cold murderous eyes. Before he could raise his weapon Varin covered his mouth with one hand and pushed him against the wall, letting his blade slide between his ribs to have a chat with his lungs. He ripped out the blade and let the guard fall as he choked to death.
'Lucky us. These guys really were amateurs. I can't believe that's all it took.'
Varin popped around the corner and gave Dagen a wave to come over.
Dagen made his way down the shorter hall and around the corner, jolting back at the bloody site. His eyes darted from the bodies to Varin and back a couple times before stepping forward and saying:
"You know you have a tranq gun right? You could've just used that instead of making this mess."
Giving Dagen a shrug Varin said:
"It would be a shame for me to waste darts when I'm close enough to use a knife. Besides, I'm better with blades anyway."
"Let's go. The exit should be down to the right here."
Briskly walking to the middle of the hall they turned right to see a hallway with a slight incline leading up to a door.
"There it is! Come on."
Not letting their hope get in the way, they proceeded as they did with the first door. Varin cracked it open to see if there were any enemies, upon seeing that there were none he slowly opened the door, Dagen standing ready to shoot. Surprisingly enough, not a single guard was in sight. Unlike the first door, this one seemed to be on a slope of a hill with a camo sheet draped over it.
Proceeding with caution, Varin said:
"Be careful, there might not be guards at the door, but there might be tree stands around watching for intruders. It seems like this place is supposed to be secret, not surprising."
Stepping further out into the open, they moved the camo sheet and scanned the grounds and treeline for enemies. It was late afternoon, but the sun was still giving plenty of light, it looked like it would set in a few hours. The door they exited from was indeed covered to make it look like part of the hill. Surrounded by forest and tucked in the mountains, this place was hidden very well. If a person were to just walk by, they probably wouldn't notice that a sheet was all that separated them from the door to hell.
With a quick pull of the trigger, Dagen shot at a tree across the way. A few short seconds later, a leafy figure hit the ground with a thump.
"Nice shot! I didn't even see what you shot at until he fell. Then again, I suppose you know what you're looking for, mister hunter."
Dagen grinned with pride as he said:
"Of course, that tree had the best vantage point of the door. I don't spot any others but there could be more throughout the forest."
Varin sighed as a hint of sadness crept into his eyes.
"Good."
He turned and pointed his tranquilizer gun at Dagen with an apologetic look.
Dagen froze, anger and confusion swirled together as he exclaimed:
"What the hell are you doing! Are you gonna turn on me now that we're out!?"
A soft smile formed on Varins face as he said:
"Of course not. I want you to go home and see your loved ones again. It would have been a waste to do all this just to kill you."
Dagens confusion only deepend.
"Then… why?"
"Because I'm going back in. I needed you to get out of the cell and find the exit cause I wasn't 100% sure that this was it. But we're out now and we took out most of the guards on the way. So, thank you for your help, truly, but I'm doing the rest myself."
Dagen was almost made speechless by the insane reason for his predicament.
"Are you crazy!? What the hell would you want to go back in for!? We JUST managed to leave! You can't go in there by yourself!'
'Oww son of a b-i-tch."
As Dagen faded into unconsciousness he heard Varin say one more thing.
"I already told you, I'm not dying in that place. Trust me, you don't want any part of what I'm about to do."
Varin dragged Dagen off to the side and put him in a run off divot in the ground. He covered him in leaves and headed for the door.
'Sorry man, not even I would ask you to walk back through the gates of hell right after helping me leave it.'
