Chapter 19 - Rise To The Occasion

Track tapped a plate, "Eat up, the amount of energy you're burning needs to be replaced. Else it will limit your growth."

The young boy began wolfing down a simplistic meal. In fact he hadn't eaten in the past few days. After being kicked out from his home—if it could be called that—the young boy was mostly figuring out what to do. Finally getting his hands on some food he couldn't contain himself.

"Slow yourself. Eat too fast and you're gonna throw it up."

Slowing just a bit the young boy savored the food. Track shook his head at the boy, "At least I warned you."

Track ate with the boy in silence. In just a few minutes the two plates of food were polished off. Picking up the plates Track lectured, "You might be tempted to get back to work, but today you rest. I originally wanted something else to happen but seems it won't go according to plan. So for now I will teach you some various stretches. You do these to keep your blood flowing, but no over exerting yourself okay?"

The young boy nodded. Perhaps it was Track's imagination, but the boy seemed to be warmer. Not so emotionally distant. He rose an eyebrow at this but didn't dwindle on the thought. Instead he took the plates to clean them, "I'll be back in a moment!"

Moving to another room he turned on a sink to start washing when a heavy knock made the door shake. Frowning he moved to the door cautiously and opened a small slit, "Who's there?"

"New gang in charge. Just came to say you'll be paying protection fees to Royal Dominion now."

"Royal Dominion? This is Street Dog territory!"

"Used to be, not anymore. Since you're a gym you'll be charged with the business protection fee."

Track looked behind him and said, "Wait a second please."

Closing the slit he moved through the rooms before landing. Grabbing something off a couch he moved back to the door. Opening it he spoke, "I swear, gangs always claiming ownership of Streets."

"Don't worry, we'll be in charge of this for a long time-"

Track didn't let them finish. His fist shot upward and landed on the speaker's jaw. They stumbled back in surprise. Not bothering to let them recover Track slid his foot forward and delivered a right hook, once again hitting the target's jaw. Having received two powerful blows at the same place the target couldn't hold their consciousness and fell to the ground.

Gazing across the area Track quickly assessed his opponents. A small group of five, although only four were available now. Currently they were standing dumbfounded, shock coursing through their bodies that some random person would so boldly attack. Utilizing this Track leapt towards his next target. His left hand twirled a small object, gripping it tightly the item extended. Now revealing itself as a baton.

Swinging his left arm the baton scored a blow across another's face. The sound of impact was enough to snap the others out of their daze and they charged towards Track. Executing a spinning back kick Track knocked away his target and turned towards the incoming enemies. Hopping back he gauged his next move.

In this moment Royal Dominion noticed one of Track's eyes was closed. As if he was fighting only with a single eye. They immediately took this as an insult. Infuriated they charged forward. While twirling the baton in his hand Track's eye darted back and forth between them. A second passed as they grew dangerously close. One of them even extended out a hand, and a strange liquid began to flow from their fingertips.

Unexpectedly, Track threw his baton at the one spraying towards him. The handle smacked accurately into their eye, making them flinch from the pain and go to cover their face. Track ducked under a swing and leapt upward. Grabbing the arm of the assailant who missed he also blocked the back of their legs with his calf. Using the force of his leap and the awkward position he put his target in, he pushed them onto their back. Without a useful ability to block the impact, being thrown to the floor without learning the proper way to fall would cause some serious damage.

As evidence, the target attempted to cushion their fall but only managed to hurt their free arm in the process. The hard asphalt caused something to crack and the target began to groan in pain. Enough time had passed and Track's second target got back up after the kick. A red mark on their face from the previous baton swat. Spitting out of fury they shouted, "Who the hell are you?"

"Right, I don't have my jacket.", Track looked back with his open eye, "You guys walked up to the front door of a Street Dog you morons! You think I'm just gonna stand by as you all claim to own the Street? This is territory of the Street Dogs!"

"Turns out you're one of them, we won't be holding back then!"

A rope manifested and was thrown forward. Track eyed it and stepped out of its range, but walked into the range of someone else. During their small vocal fight the others had actually positioned themselves to surround Track. With one eye closed he was unaware of this and stepped into their range.

A blow scored across Track's cheek as he received a punch. Spinning with the blow he punched back, but found his fist only hit an arm. His initial surprise attack wore off, he had hoped to extend it a bit by obtaining the morale high ground with the vocal fight. A miscalculation on his end, for Royal Dominion was told that the Street Dogs weren't to be feared. Only a few of their members were worth fearing.

Another member kicked his gut and he doubled over. His arms were grabbed and he was helpless to whatever happened next. Struggle as he might he couldn't quite free himself. One of Royal Dominion cracked their knuckles, "Seems the rumors were true, you lot aren't worth paying attention to."

Track spat towards their feet, "As if, I say I did pretty good while incredibly outnumbered."

His head snapped back as one of Royal Dominion punched his face. His nose bent out of shape and blood began to flow down his nostrils. Eyes seeing stars he wavered. Blinking several times his other eye opened, revealing a glowing blue light. The one hitting him warily took a step back, after all Track's ability wasn't known to them.

Track remained displeased at the outcome. Suddenly his vision was filled with several blue figures. All of them in various positions and poses. Because of it he couldn't quite see what was happening anymore. His ability. . . was one of the more rarer ones.

You see, various abilities had different categories they fell into. You remember when Black Iron identified Top Dog's as "Strength Amplifying"? That was because of the categories. While each ability was roughly unique—although there was a lot of cases of duplicate abilities existing, whether it be at the same or different time—a lot of them held the same outcome, purpose, or effect. So categories are a popular way to sort them. There are even rankings for abilities, for now let me explain why Track's ability was unique.

There are several categories, each of them and their subs I will explain when the time is right. The one Track's falls under is called a "Codex". These abilities usually are considered "Hybrids" or "Unique". Usually due to them falling under several categories, or being special enough to be written in the Ability Codex. Hence the name Codex. Abilities written in the Codex are ranked and thoroughly explained, due to several them posing as potential threats. Because of this they usually have odd names too.

Track's ability was worthy enough to be written in this Codex.

[Chess Player's Gambit: Allows the user to see several potential "moves" of the people in their vision. Additionally, depending on the user's condition, will, and control, they are capable of seeing additional potential moves, and counter moves the user is capable of performing.

Notes:

- The moves granted by this ability usually consist of the most likely action the person is going to make. Whether it be combat exclusive, or general actions

- This is ranked D, but has a potential of B]

Rankings are. . . unique in this. Rather than ranking an ability in terms of how strong they are. They're ranked in how much of a threat they would be. Abilities in the Codex have two different rankings, a general one, and a potential one. General rankings are their threat level if an average person utilized it. Potential rankings are if someone exceptionally skilled in wielding it used it. Potential rankings can change if someone proves to use it in a more terrifying manner.

The rankings are easy to follow however, using a typical lettering format. As for an idea of scale. . . Ivak's ability is ranked Z+. It was rated S+ for a while, but after the missile testing it was promptly raised to Z+.

As for why Track disliked it, it was because he couldn't control the total amount of "moves" he saw! Thus he kept an eye shut during battle to not see these manifestations. In his moment of pain he opened this eye, and now his vision was filled with the potential moves everyone in his sight could make.
