Magic was a cruel concept mainly because of the mysteries it held. Almost no known magic could be conjured out of thin air. Understanding the workings of even a portion of this phenomenon would instantly make someone extremely valuable.
The commonest kind of magic was the Sorcery of Runes or Rune Theory. With enough knowledge of a vast array of runes from the divine language of the gods, mortals were capable of creating some semblance of magic.
The quality of that magic depended on how well the Rune Circles had been constructed.
The other form of magic which was even rarer, was the Magic of Blessings. Many houses within the Wall had demonstrated this kind of magic within their bloodlines.
