Chapter 29: Amon's Plea II
Sarah looked at Amon with a pious reverence.
She had not witnessed anything or anyone so 'pure' in her lifetime and even the Grandmaster of the church could not compare to him in the slightest. Amon at that moment seemed to her like a personification of all that is dark, evil or corrupt. It was more like meeting a concept rather than a person. It was like he represented a certain 'aspect' of reality.
"A God…"
She subconsciously muttered a word that caused her to jump in panic. She couldn't believe she used that word to describe a demon.
"I am no God but I am on a level of what you call an Angel"
"Angel…?"
Sarah seemed confused. How can a demon be an angel? Are they not two opposites?
"You spent your whole life dedicated to faith yet you know so little…"
Amon in his tone now resembled a priest that was ready to spread his gospel to curious children.
"Have you never asked yourself what it means to be a God?"
As soon as he asked this their surroundings started to change. They were now seated at the back row of what seemed like a cathedral dedicated to the Goddess of Light. It was filled to the brim with believers, all of them knelt and prayed out loud.
"Oh the Goddess, you are all that is good. I beg of you to spread your light upon this dark world…"
In unison they said a common prayer which caused Sarah to have a sudden enlightenment.
"To be a God is to be an 'aspect' of this world… To be a God of Light you have to be the light!"
Sarah now understood why she subconsciously thought Amon was a God. Her true vision makes her see the level of 'purity' the person achieved and… wait doesn't that imply that Amon is a being close to becoming a God? A person can become a God!?
The more she thought the more she realised just how shocking everything was and how little she actually knew. Ever since she could remember she served the Church of Purity and now it turns out that everything she considered to be an absolute truth to be nothing but lies. Did they lie to her purposefully or were they similarly ignorant? She wasn't sure but a feeling of betrayal slowly started to arise in her heart.
"Do not blame the blind for not seeing"
As if sensing her doubts Amon suddenly commented.
"Look at those believers praising the Goddess. Do you think they know the truth?"
"No…"
Sarah shook her head slightly. She understood what he meant by that.
"Let me tell you this… Faith for Gods is like blood while the faith itself is empowered by ignorance. On this principle do Gods operate and this is why the God of Purity was murdered. He saw differently from their vision of the world…"
Amon looked extremely sad as if he was recalling the loss of a good friend.
"In the Age of Darkness the situation was extremely chaotic and Gods filled with paranoia and greed decided to kill him, claiming it was for the greater good… They killed my God, my friend for nothing but a small gain!"
Amon clenched his chest as if in great pain. He seemed to be on the verge of tears unable to bear the sorrowful past.
"This… You served the God of Purity while being a demon? And all that happened in the Age of Darkness when demons invaded the mortal realm?"
"Sigh… I may be a demon but I served him as an Angel. An Angel of Purity"
When he said this the surroundings changed once again. This time they were atop of a mountain, spectating a peculiar scene.
Two men were casually chatting with each other about their believers and how they… talked with them!? Wait… The tall man with this radiant and warm smile is the God of Purity and the other… Amon!?
Sarah's mind was blown to smithereens. She did not expect to see a God with her own two eyes and it was also unheard of for a God to simply talk with their believers… was this the reason he was killed? Now that she thought about it the Gods are really not fond of being depicted in any way. There existed no paintings, statues or even writings portraying them in any way and it was considered blasphemy to do so.
"It was a difference between faith based on understanding and faith based on ignorance and as it was easier to make people pray to you when they knew little about you, most Gods chose the latter"
Amon spoke this in a grieving tone and the scenery changed yet again.
"No…"
Sarah muttered in disbelief. Tears started to drop from her face as what she witnessed completely crushed her heart. It was a corpse of God that spoke about the daily lives of his believers with fervour. It was Amon kneeling in front of him with a face full of anger and desire for revenge.
That feeling also invaded her mind.
"This is unacceptable! Did they really kill him for such an outrageous reason!?"
"People can kill for just a single coin and although the Gods try their best to make it seem they are something far and above the truth is that they are very much human"
Amon patted her on her shoulder as if to console her.
"The reason I showed you all this… The reason I deceived you earlier… is because I hope you can help me bring justice to my fallen God and let the world see 'purity' for what it is. Are you willing to help me?"
Sarah knelt on one knee and with a resolute expression proclaimed:
"I swear upon my faith that I will do my best to ensure that true 'purity' returns to this wicked world and make those treacherous Gods fall from the skies!"
