Chapter 15 - Ambush

This time I would like to find fruit to eat so here we are again in the heart of the forest.

I'm a little less tense now that I know what my magic can do with so little energy in it. However, I am still not reassured about my mastery of magic and I still think that I must work on my mastery of magic as soon as possible so as not to hurt Egan or me during a spell.

Egan has better hearing than mine and shares the memory of any suspicious noises as soon as he hears one. We made ourselves several times false fears to react to the slightest noise. After all we are in the middle of a forest and it is teeming with life but we have also been attacked twice already so we can't help but be very careful.

Egan didn't eat his wolf entirely so he should at least be able to eat when we get back if we don't find anything. For my part, I dream of fruit! Eating corpses still disgusts me.

Fortunately we very quickly spot birds, squirrels and a few small reptiles eating fruit and I take the opportunity to recover some in another bucket that I brought after having put down the one filled with water.

In a few hours I have several kinds of fruit and in large enough quantities to eat for a few days.

Satisfied with my harvest, we set off again in the direction of the village to deposit the crops there. Once there, I go to the house where we slept the day before to take out the sea bass that Egan started eating this morning so that the smell doesn't get worse.

It's too late… As soon as I opened the door, the smell hit me and gave me heaves .

Squeezing my throat, blocking my breath, I hurry to get the corpse out of the tree.

"It's going to take days to get rid of this smell," I said in disgust.

Stepping back to catch my breath, I see Egan sniffing the wolf.

"Egan, you can't eat this. You will get sick. »

He looks at me then looks at the meat and repeats several times before sending me his confusion.

"We're going to use it as bait to attract other predators since you obviously don't seem to be put off by the smell. Please can you pull the carcass of the wolf? The smell is very bothersome to me. »

He'll stand behind the wolf and after sinking his teeth into the corpse, he starts pulling it with those jaws.

I smile "Ok perfect, let's take it further into the forest but in the opposite direction of the waterfall, I don't want to bring more predators there than necessary." »

So we take the reverse route to the waterfall and walk a few miles, not as far as I would like but Egan seems tired of pulling on that dead weight.

The effort seems to have been a bit too much for Egan as he gasps severely once he drops the corpse from his mouth.

"Sorry Egan, don't hesitate to tell me if you're tired, I underestimated the effort it takes to drag this wolf." »

I get closer to the wolf while holding my breath, pull him into the middle of the trees where we have a clear view and try to make him bleed as much as possible to try to attract something.

"Egan do you think you could climb trees?" »

He looks at me but doesn't seem sure he understands my question. I point to the tree before stepping in front of it and climbing for a few seconds before returning to the ground.

I turn to him and he comes to stand in front of the tree. He observes the tree by raising his head several times before placing his front legs on the tree.

He sticks his long claws into it and begins to climb, gently at first then quickly ending up climbing faster than I would be able to.

I smile and climb in my turn in the tree to overtake him since he had landed on the first branch. I stop once I feel I am sufficiently hidden by the branches.

It was in this position, me sitting on the branch, Egan lying down, that we laid our very first ambush.
